Full screen is unreliable? That's because you don't see how much opportunity it brings to domestic panel manufacturers

The mobile phone market in 2017 was definitely dominated by "full screen", and almost all domestic and foreign mobile phone manufacturers bet on full screen. Let's not discuss how many mobile phone products can be truly called full screen in the market, but this wave of enthusiasm has at least brought substantial growth and rapid layout opportunities for panel manufacturers.

According to forecasts from multiple agencies, in 2017, the global mobile phone screen market size will surpass that of TV screens for the first time.

According to a report by market research firm IHS Markit, from 2010 to 2016, the global mobile phone screen market grew at an average annual rate of 17%, while the TV screen market declined by an average annual rate of 8%. The global mobile phone screen market is expected to reach US$45.6 billion this year, exceeding the TV screen market (US$41.3 billion).

Another research institution, Strategy Analytics, also believes that the global delivery volume of mobile phone screens will reach 3.24 billion this year and 4.62 billion in five years. By then, the market size gap between mobile phone screens and TV screens will become increasingly obvious.

The continuous upgrade of smartphone screens has brought a new growth point to the mobile phone panel market. With the explosion of the full-screen concept this year, OLED panels have become the key. Compared with traditional LCD screens, OLED screens can be self-luminous, bendable, display finer, more colorful, and save more power. Such panels fully meet the various requirements of mobile phone manufacturers for full-screen mobile phone screens.

As the companies with the most say in the field of OLED panels in the world, Samsung and LG have not only received huge orders, but also stepped up their pace to seize the OLED market.

However, with the significant decline in OLED screen production costs this year and the continuous increase in the industry's production capacity, domestic OLED panel manufacturers have ushered in new opportunities. Although Japanese and Korean companies still control the main market for OLED screens, domestic OLED panel manufacturers represented by BOE and Tianma are gradually gaining market dominance with low-priced and high-quality products.

According to statistics, the current domestic mobile phone panel production capacity accounts for about 10% of the world's total, and 70%-80% of the market demand is met by imports. According to market insiders, the popularity of full-screen phones will increase the demand for panel orders by about 10% in the third quarter of this year, and the price of mobile phone panels is likely to remain strong in the short term.

In response to market demand, BOE revealed that it has achieved mass production of full-screen displays, and multiple production lines are currently at full capacity. Tianma said it will mass produce full-screen displays within the year. Tianma's financial report shows that Tianma achieved revenue of 6.204 billion yuan in the first half of this year, a year-on-year increase of 24.83%. BOE turned losses into profits, and is expected to make a profit of 4.2 billion to 4.5 billion yuan in the first half of this year.

It can be said that the explosion of full-screen displays has brought domestic OLED manufacturers an opportunity to grow rapidly and seize the market. Market institutions have analyzed that the growth rate of global smartphone shipments will slow down significantly in the next five years, and the excess rate of mobile phone panels may reach 30% in 2017. This means that domestic manufacturers that can mass-produce OLED panels will enjoy market dividends and gain new opportunities.

Although full-screen is still a concept that is subject to much hype and doubt so far, the efforts behind it by domestic panel manufacturers cannot be ignored. It is estimated that within a few years, we will be able to get rid of the monopoly of Korean companies on the OLED market. By then, we will have more to do with screens.
