Are German cars more durable than Japanese cars? Media tested the Volkswagen Sagitar against the Corolla. Who lost again?

There is a saying among car enthusiasts that German cars are thick and resistant to collision, while Japanese cars are thin and shock-absorbing. As to which of the two cars has a higher safety factor, there have always been different opinions among the public.


In last year's C-IASI crash test, all German Volkswagen models failed miserably. The performances of Magotan, Tiguan, and especially Passat were hard to describe.

On the contrary, last year, many models of Toyota's TNGA architecture performed very well in C-IASI, changing the inherent impression of many consumers that "Japanese cars are not crash-resistant" and no longer blindly believing in the quality of German cars.

Recently, an automotive media released a head-on test video of Toyota Corolla and Volkswagen Sagitar.

In the video, the test uses a two-car head-on collision at 64 km/h with a 50% offset, with the driver's side overlapping. Finally, an assessment is made based on the degree of damage to the vehicles and the dummy's injury data.

The test vehicles are the 2021 Toyota Corolla 1.2T S-CVT Pioneer Edition with a guide price of 119,800 yuan; and the Volkswagen Sagitar 2021 200TSI DSG Comfort Intelligent Connection Edition with a guide price of 150,900 yuan. Both models are equipped with head side airbags, side curtain airbags and knee airbags in terms of active safety.


Among them, the Volkswagen Sagitar is the 2021 model. It is not the old model that suffered a terrible failure last year, but a new model that has been strengthened.

Looking directly at the results, the Japanese Toyota Corolla has a higher degree of collapse, while the Volkswagen Sagitar's body collapse is not serious. In terms of structural performance, the Toyota Corolla is obviously inferior to the Volkswagen Sagitar.


In the collision of the Volkswagen Sagitar, all the airbags were deployed, the dummy was well protected, the doors could be opened normally after the collision, the body structure was maintained well, the A-pillar was intact, and the intrusion from the front of the car was not large.

The front intrusion of the Toyota Corolla is obviously larger, the lower firewall is seriously deformed, there is a gap in the door hinge pillar, the A-pillar is slightly deformed, and the cockpit frame is still intact.

In addition, the Corolla's doors did not automatically unlock after the collision and could only be opened from the inside.


Through disassembly, it was found that the deformation of Corolla was indeed more serious, the central channel was also twisted, and the collision pressure caused the central channel to sink.

It is reported that in the multiple tests conducted by the media, Toyota Corolla became the model with the most serious deformation.

On the contrary, the Volkswagen that had previously overturned was found to have significantly better deformation and overall strength than the Corolla after being disassembled.
