1. “Know Yourself and Know Your Enemy”: Be familiar with the operating mechanism of the Douyin platform

Operators who don’t want to make money are all hooligans, so if you are doing it, you must aim to make money. It’s the same principle when it comes to dating a person. If you want to win the heart of a beautiful girl, you must first study her preferences, then please her, and then win her heart. Similarly, whether you want to make money on Douyin or Kuaishou, the most basic thing you have to know is the platform's operating rules, what it likes, what it dislikes, and what it is not allowed to do. Only by understanding the platform's characteristics and work distribution mechanism can we create works recommended by the platform, become the pig stepping on the wind, and go overseas with the east wind.

Characteristics of the platform: decentralization, algorithmic mechanism, and superimposed recommendations.

1. Decentralization

The biggest difference between private domain platforms such as Douyin and WeChat is that private domain platforms are based on who you follow, and you will see more content from that person. They are based on the account's fan base. The more fans you have, the greater the traffic.

This is not the case with Tik Tok. Even if you follow someone, you may still not be able to see his videos. What does it mean? What this means is that although you may seem to have gained your own fans on Tik Tok, it actually has nothing to do with you. Don’t be too self-congratulatory. The number of views of every video posted on your account is still based on the content of each video itself and has nothing to do with the number of your fans.

This is the underlying logic of the TikTok platform to maintain high-quality content. If a platform wants to retain customers for a long time, the content must be hardcore, so TikTok will give TikTok creators many opportunities, and the platform will have more and more ways to monetize, which means there will be more opportunities to start a business or make money from a side job. Not only on Douyin, it is also very easy to monetize by quickly reaching 1,000 fans on the Kuaishou platform.

2. Platform algorithm push mechanism

The playback volume on the Douyin and Kuaishou platforms is calculated based on algorithm push, which is different from the algorithms of private domain platforms such as WeChat. Let’s take Tik Tok as an example: the platform’s traffic pool exists in a “stepped” manner. When you publish a video, the system will allocate a certain amount of traffic to each video, and then determine whether to push more traffic based on several core key factors of the work, and send you to the next higher traffic pool.

The core key factors that affect videos entering higher traffic pools will be explained in detail later.

3. System overlay recommendation mechanism

If you want to obtain superimposed traffic, the review standards are the same as those for the traffic pool. Generally speaking, if the quality of the short videos you post is good. If you get about 1k playbacks assigned by the system, and the number of reposts reaches 30, the system will automatically determine that the video is more popular, and will automatically weight the video, which means that the cumulative recommendation will give you 3 million; if the number of reposts reaches 300, the cumulative recommendation will be 3000, and so on based on this data.

How to guide users to comment, increase interaction and gain more exposure will be explained in detail later.

4. Video distribution mechanism

Let’s take Douyin as an example here. The distribution mechanism of the Douyin platform is in the following order: deduplication, review, feature recognition and manual intervention.

First, the deduplication mechanism

The purpose is to avoid the transfer of video content. In order to better maintain the platform's content innovation and user retention, all platforms will protect originality. Therefore, if you post someone else’s video, there is a high possibility that the video will not be recommended by the platform, and in serious cases your account will be blocked.

So what does repeated video mean? This includes videos that are copied from others, as well as videos that are highly similar. However, Douyin's mechanism for removing duplicate content is not particularly strict, otherwise there wouldn't be the saying that posting it the second time will be more popular. Many people have taken advantage of this loophole to make profits. In general, if you want to develop healthily and long-term on TikTok, you still need to create original content or learn pseudo-original techniques.

If you are not good at originality or your originality is not sustainable enough, how to avoid being accused of plagiarism? Here are some tips to avoid plagiarism, such as adding filters/changing music/adding transitions/changing video frames/adding anti-plagiarism bars, etc. (The space is limited, so the specific principles and steps will not be elaborated here. If you want to learn more, you are welcome to study and discuss more methods in private. Contact information will be posted at the end of the article)

Second, the review mechanism

The review mechanisms of platforms such as Douyin and Kuaishou are the same, which are divided into machine review and manual review.

Generally, machine review is the main method, and manual review is performed for some cases where the machine cannot judge or the data is abnormal and requires human intervention.

The review generally involves reviewing the video content and video description/title. The main review is to see whether there is sensitive information and whether the traffic is diverted to other platforms. After all videos on the platform are released, they will enter a "video database". Each work will be marked with a unique code. Of course, we cannot see this code. When anyone on the platform releases any work, the first step will be to enter this large "video database" for screening and review. The system will automatically compare the video title and content to see if it complies with the platform rules, whether there is any violation or sensitivity, and whether there is the same or highly similar video content in the library. If the same or highly similar video is found, it will not pass the review.

Therefore, posting more positive and energetic videos is more in line with what the platform wants. Let’s take an example. Kuaishou’s philosophy is “embracing every kind of life”, while Douyin’s philosophy is even higher, which is to directly “record a beautiful life”. However, if you are a corporate marketing type, you can obtain official certifications such as Blue V, and if you meet certain conditions, you can conduct official marketing.

How to conduct marketing and monetization through the Douyin and Kuaishou platforms will be explained in detail later.

The third one is feature recognition

After the video passes the review, the Douyin system will label the video and match it with relevant user groups, so as to push the video to relevant groups of people.

Then you will definitely ask me, should I maintain a Douyin account? What are tags? This is also the most frequently asked question I have encountered so far. I believe that friends who often watch videos will see various opinions on labels. Some people say that if you don’t maintain your account well, your labels will be messy, your fans will not be vertical, and you will not be recommended. You need to watch fixed types of videos every day at fixed times. Let me give you a brief explanation here. In fact, the labels are not complicated. Don’t be confused by fancy terms.

So let’s talk about the issue of labels first. In fact, Douyin has two labels: “user labels” and “creator labels”. The types of videos you watch from others every day constitute your user label, and the content you post on your own account determines your creator label. The two are neither conflicting nor related. Can’t a creator who posts cooking videos every day watch funny videos? This logic itself goes against the positioning of the Douyin and Kuaishou platforms, right?

Now let’s talk about the question of “whether you need to maintain an account”. In fact, it is just to determine whether your account is a maliciously registered “machine/zombie fan” account. So before posting a video or when you have nothing to do, you should just watch videos and interact normally to let the system know that you are not a maliciously registered machine/zombie fan.

What you watch is not important. What matters is what you want to get on the Douyin and Kuaishou platforms and what you can create for Douyin. So whether it is purely for entertainment or for commercial purposes, you must think it through clearly.

Fourth, human intervention

Since machines cannot accurately determine whether video content violates regulations or what its quality is, and machine reviews are based on past data, they cannot perform 100% screening and review. Therefore, manual intervention mechanisms are needed to fill in the gaps in machine reviews.

2. How to find the most referenceable benchmark account?

First of all, we need to know that creators and users are different. The difference between the two is that users only care about whether their needs/preferences/emotions are met, and passively accept the visual and auditory experience brought by the video throughout the process. Just like a movie, it is the audience who feels the content, but it is the director behind the scenes who decides what feelings the audience will feel through the production of the content.

In fact, after several years of development, the platform has produced many excellent creators and content. If you lack originality, you can use tools to refer to excellent content that has been verified by the platform. Standing on the shoulders of successful people will help you avoid detours. However, when referring to excellent videos, you must think from the creator's perspective: Why did he say this at the beginning, and what are the benefits? What are his comments like? What did the video do to attract likes, attention, and comments?

Here are some video data analysis tools:

Feigua Data/Chan Mama/Guangxi Data/Kas Data, as well as some small tools of the platform itself

These tools can help us quickly understand the data of different types of videos, keep up with the latest popular videos, and provide creative references.

  • Tip 1: When you are just starting out, reference and imitation are the best and fastest ways to learn.
  • Tip 2: Popular videos are time-sensitive, so you need to find accounts that have been active recently and have grown the fastest as benchmarks.
  • Tip 3: Don’t benchmark against top accounts right from the start. The platform rules are different during the account creation stage and are of little reference value. You must benchmark against accounts that have been created recently and have been effective.

3. How to locate an account?

1. IP creation

Simply put, it is personal image. No matter when, you will find that fans are relatively stable about their favorite IPs, and fans' trust in IPs is higher than that of ordinary creators.

Advantages of establishing an IP: Once the IP image is established, you can get rid of or reduce the restrictions on the products you carry. As long as the products are not counterfeit or shoddy, most of your fans will buy them. Because essentially they are paying for you, your personal charm is very important. The personal charm mentioned here does not mean that you need to be beautiful, but that you need to have a fixed label that can arouse the emotions of the audience.

As long as your label is clear and real enough, no matter where you are or what your identity is, it will not affect others' liking for you. Remember: your image must be real and sustainable. If your image is designed, either you pretend in the video your whole life, or don't fake it in the first place.

For example: If you are a single career-oriented woman, you can record your busy work and exquisite life by filming. You don’t need a filming team. You can start with a tripod and a mobile phone.

Being able to endure loneliness and persistence are the hard truths: The creation of an IP image cannot be established in a short period of time. It requires persisting in publishing vertical works and constantly emphasizing one's own personal IP to the audience. Therefore, it not only requires your day-to-day execution, but also the endurance of silence in the early stage. But you must believe me and believe in yourself. If you can achieve this step, you have surpassed 80% of people. We have personally witnessed that too many people work on their videos for a few days or a month, and when they see that the playback volume is not good, they give up without thinking about how to improve it.

Tik Tok and Kuaishou can be said to be opportunities for everyone, but only a few can seize the opportunity and succeed. For those who have not persisted for long or even started, but are shouting that Tik Tok's monetization is just a lie, I just want to say: "Whatever such people do is a cover, because they have never thought about working hard to change the status quo, and they do not have the necessary qualities to make money."

So what do we do: No matter which industry you want to do, you must first know which industries you can do on Douyin and Kuaishou, and which industries are prohibited from entering. I recommend a website: www.feigua.cn. This website contains all the industry classifications on Douyin, and which accounts in each industry are doing well. There are account data rankings for your reference.

If you want to create a good account, you must first know what a good account is, and then you will be able to follow the trend.

2. Short videos promote products

That is to recommend products through short videos, attract audiences to click on product links by introducing products or having products appear on screen, and then get sales commissions themselves.

Advantages: If you position yourself as a good product recommendation account from the beginning, then everyone will view you as a good product recommendation account. They will not speak ill of you or unfollow you just because you promote products. In addition, there is no upper limit on how much you can earn. It all depends on the number of video views and the effect.

Challenge: The challenge lies in persistence. It is normal to have low playback volume and no sales at the beginning. If you are a consumer, you will not easily place an order quickly on an unfamiliar account. Instead, you will understand the continuity and consistency from the video content or the content of this account. Once the other party agrees, they will definitely choose to place an order with you. It is just a matter of time.

Therefore, if your goal is to sell products through short videos, you must post more videos. Even if each of your videos only has 300 views, and every 300 views can bring in 5 sales, then the revenue you get from posting one video a day and five videos a day will definitely be different.

How to do it: There are certain conditions for starting to sell goods, 1,000 fans + 10 works + real-name authentication + 500 yuan required to open a window display. Remember: posting more videos does not mean posting them randomly. Videos about good products must focus on the product itself and clearly introduce the product's functions and selling points. Even if you don’t have a source of goods, you can now make money by selling goods on Douyin without a source of goods. Due to limited space, we will not elaborate on the specific design and planning. If you want to learn more, you are welcome to discuss more gameplay in private. Contact information will be posted at the end of the article.

3. Livestreaming

Currently, it is the only way most merchants choose to sell goods through live streaming.

Advantages: As long as you have enough time, a certain level of eloquence, and certain preferential policies, there is no upper limit to your live streaming sales.

Challenges: Live streaming sales is a method that involves the most comprehensive factors, including the overall quality of the anchor (appearance/talent/eloquence/expressiveness, etc.), products (whether there is a source of supply, whether the product has advantages, whether the price has advantages, etc.), operations (account operations, live broadcast room operations, paid promotion, etc.), platform live broadcast rules, etc. This method is more suitable for team operations. It is relatively difficult for an individual to do live streaming sales, and it requires more investment in time, money, energy, etc.

How to do it: If you open your own Douyin store, you can ask other influencers to promote your products, or you can promote the products yourself. There are certain conditions for opening a Doudian store, including business license + real-name authentication + deposit, etc. As the merchant management system of Douyin and Kuaishou platforms gradually improves, the sooner you enter the market, the better.

4. How to create content

After confirming the account positioning, it’s time to move on to the most exciting step: creating content.

Most people publish their works as soon as they finish shooting. The most important step in account operation is "planning and planning". Many people think that shooting videos is very simple and they can shoot them with their mobile phones, but the most difficult part is the planning behind the video. Just like shooting a TV series, each episode must be independent and related. It cannot deviate from the core plot, but it must present different plots.

There are many knowledge points involved here. I have recorded detailed courses for each step, which include a large number of practical cases and shot-by-shot knowledge points, which is quite systematic.

I can only give a brief explanation here. If you need a course, there will be communication methods at the end of the article.

5. Monetization Model

The ultimate purpose of our coming to Douyin is to monetize, but the monetization ability of an account is not proportional to the number of your fans.

In terms of execution, you should increase your followers first, because if you don’t have fans, you will not be eligible to monetize. However, when planning an account, you must first conceive a monetization model and delve into your own field according to your own plan. Don't just focus on other people's popular videos, just shoot whichever one is popular.

It will mess up your creator tags, making your account disorganized and your fans not vertical.

Compared with the number of fans, what has a greater impact on monetization is the quality of fans. You will not be able to chew too much.

No Douyin account can attract all types of fans. If you cater to all fans, it means you are not catering to any fans and there is no stickiness.

Remember: "Without hatred, there is no preference."

Before creating an account, you need to plan your target users. The more specific the user portrait is and the more accurate the fan types are, even if the number is small, as long as the stickiness is strong, the monetization ability will be strong enough.

First, the character positioning

What is a personality? These are the labels that people give you: skin care expert, funny blogger, inspirational mom, etc., these can all be your labels.

The platform has no idea what content you are producing, so how can it label you and recommend more accurate traffic?

Second, how can you tell whether your account has been labeled by the system?

You can use other people's accounts to search for your own Douyin account, and then click on the triangle symbol on the right. There will be a recommendation to follow. The recommended type of follow is the account with a similar tag to yours. If the recommendation is for friends in the address book, it means that your account has not been tagged yet.

Try to post vertically when possible. Don’t turn Douyin and Kuaishou into your Moments. You can’t post skin care tips today and fitness knowledge tomorrow. Otherwise, the system won’t know what kind of fans to recommend your content to, and won’t be able to label you.

Third, the form of display

The display of your work homepage is like a window for your external development. If the first thing customers see when they come in is beautiful, then the first impression will naturally be good. If what they see is messy, then you have to rely entirely on your content to attract others. However, you have to know that 90% of people attach great importance to first impressions.

Making money on TikTok is definitely not a myth in the eyes of those who clamor, but a reality that comes from the efforts of those who practice it.

The era of short videos has given each of us the opportunity to turn things around, but it is up to you to decide whether it is a myth or reality.

If you have more ideas, please feel free to add WeChat to discuss with me. I can share the courses with you, and I will also share the newly learned short video gameplay in the circle of friends.

Our philosophy is: it is impossible to dominate the market alone as long as you start and persist, we will be like-minded friends and there will be more opportunities for cooperation in the future.

I hope this article can help you start your counterattack. Come on, I wish you success!
