Smart TV apps: Silicon Valley's next battleground
After many failures, Silicon Valley is once again betting that it can revolutionize television—this time by making it run apps as colorful as those on smartphones.
Google and Apple are urging software developers to do for television what they have done for smartphones. At the heart of the push are new set-top boxes and TVs that tech companies are seeking to turn into platforms for interactive experiences, not just traditional TV programming.
Google is expected to showcase the new vision this week at I/O, its annual developer conference in San Francisco. The event comes a year after the Internet giant launched its Android TV operating system and its Player set-top box. TV makers including Sony and Sharp have adopted Android TV. In March, chip maker Nvidia Corp. unveiled plans for an Android TV device called the Shield, and in early May, Razer Inc. began selling its own device.
Apple is expected to go further at its developer conference on June 8 by unveiling plans to open its Apple TV set-top box more to app developers. Industry executives said they believe the company is working on an upgraded Apple TV with a more powerful processor. The chip would enable the Apple TV to run games, a potential challenge to consoles such as Sony's PlayStation and Microsoft's Xbox.
Others foresee a slew of new apps turning the TV into an all-in-one command center for food delivery, video conferencing, dating, home automation and home security, as well as some unexpected app categories.
Silicon Valley's vision for television still faces many hurdles, such as designing a large-screen user interface that is appealing and easy to use for consumers, said Brett Sappington, research director at Parks Associates, a company that tracks TV-related products.
