Inventory of SSDs with different interfaces: What platforms are they suitable for?

The poor reading and writing experience tells us that mechanical hard disks are destined to be eliminated by the times. The unstoppable SSD solid state drive has broken the dominance of Winchester mechanical hard disks in the computer hardware field for many years. The transmission performance is several times that of HDD mechanical hard disks, which has doubled the system experience. After years of development, SSD has undoubtedly dominated the main storage market.

In this storage revolution, in order to achieve faster speed and better experience, SSD interfaces are also constantly evolving and innovating. For example, mainstream SSD interfaces include SATA, M.2, PCI-E, mSATA, etc. What are the differences between these four common interfaces? What platforms are they suitable for? SATA3.0 interface: As the most widely used hard disk interface, the biggest advantage of SATA 3.0 interface is its maturity. Ordinary 2.5-inch SSDs and HDD hard disks use this interface, with a theoretical transmission bandwidth of 6Gbps. Although it is much worse than the 10Gbps or even 32Gbps bandwidth of the new interface, ordinary 2.5-inch SSDs do not have such high requirements, and a read and write speed of more than 500MB/s is enough. On HDD hard disks, 6Gbps bandwidth is far from a bottleneck. Who makes HDD hard disks develop too slowly and the speed has not changed qualitatively. Although the SATA 3.0 interface specifications are outdated, Lian Po is old and can still make a living. Ordinary users do not have demanding requirements for performance, and SATA 3.0 will be the mainstream choice for a long time. The applicable platform is also relatively wide. Basically, there is no problem with connecting SATA SSD to devices with SATA interface . Representative products include: Samsung 850EVO, Samsung 850PRO, Crucial MX300, Toshiba A100, Plextor M7V, etc. PCI-E interface: In traditional SATA hard disks, when we perform data operations, the data will first be read from the hard disk to the memory, and then the data will be extracted to the CPU for calculation, and then written to the memory after calculation and stored in the hard disk; PCI-E is different. The data is directly connected to the CPU through the bus, eliminating the process of memory calling the hard disk, and the transmission efficiency and speed are doubled. Simply put, we can understand the two channels as two identical cars. The car with PCI-E channel is like driving on a highway, while the car with SATA channel is like driving on a rugged mountain road. Obviously, the transmission speed of PCI-E SSD is much faster than that of SATA SSD. Currently, there are two types of PCI-E interface channels: PCI-E 2.0 x2 and PCI-E 3.0 x4. The maximum speed reaches 32Gbps, which can meet the use for a period of time in the future. In addition, the problem that the early PCI-E hard disk could not be used as a boot disk has been solved long ago. Now most flagship SSDs will choose the PCI-E interface. Although PCI-E SSD has many advantages, it is not suitable for everyone. Due to the quality of flash memory particles and main control, the overall cost of PCI-E SSD is relatively high, and it is more expensive than traditional SATA solid-state drives. In addition, since PCI-E will occupy the bus channel, the number of CPU channels on entry-level and mid-range platforms is relatively small, and it is not suitable to add PCI-E SSD. Only Z170, or top platforms such as X79 and X99 can fully exert the performance of PCI-E SSD. In general, if you are a rich man who is not short of money, then PCI-E SSD is the way to go! Representative products: Intel 750, Jintek Apocalypse G5, and Galaxy Hall of Fame PCI-E. M.2 interface: M.2 interface, originally called NGFF, the full name is Next Generation Form Factor, with a width of 22mm, a single-sided thickness of 2.75mm, and a double-sided flash memory layout of only 3.85mm thick, but M.2 has rich scalability, up to 110mm, which can increase the capacity of SSD. M.2 interface is also divided into two types: Socket2 and Socket3. The former supports SATA and PCI-Ex2 interfaces, with theoretical read and write speeds of 700MB/s and 500MB/s respectively; while the latter is designed for high-performance storage, supports PCI-EX4, and has a theoretical interface speed of up to 32Gb/s, which is more than five times that of SATA interface. Representative products: Samsung 960PRO, Samsung 960EVO, Plextor M8e, Intel 600P, etc. mSATA interface: In the early days, in order to better adapt to the use environment of ultra-thin devices such as ultrabooks, the mSATA (mini SATA) interface developed for portable devices came into being. You can think of it as a mini version of the standard SATA interface, and the physical interface is the same as the mini PCI-E interface. The mSATA interface is an important process in the miniaturization of SSDs, but mSATA still has not gotten rid of some defects of the SATA interface, such as it is still a SATA channel and the speed is still 6Gbps. Many reasons have prevented the mSATA interface from becoming popular, but it has been replaced by the M.2 SSD with greater upgrade potential. mSATA is facing the fate of being eliminated, and the M.2 interface is now the most popular. It not only occupies a major position on the mobile platform, but also becomes more and more popular on the desktop platform with the popularity of the 32Gbps M.2 interface on the 100 series motherboard. Of course, if your old laptop has an mSATA interface and you are looking to upgrade it, you might consider the representative product: Kingston MS200 series mSATA SSD, etc. In the 60 years of computer development, from the initial punch card to today's SSD, storage media has undergone earth-shaking changes. In recent years, SSD has developed rapidly, which can be seen from the evolution of the interface form. At present, it has interfaces such as SATA, mSATA, M.2, PCI-E, etc., and is used in various platform devices. At present, there are all kinds of SSD products with various interfaces, and you can speed up as needed. I believe there will be one that suits you.
