Seals are pinniped mammals with streamlined bodies and short, smooth fur that provides excellent protection against wind and cold. They can live both in water and on land, feeding on marine life. They are excellent swimmers and divers. Their swimming speed is 20-30 kilometers per hour, reaching a maximum of 37 kilometers per hour; their diving time is generally 5-10 minutes, but can be as long as 70 minutes. The Weddell seal is the strongest diver, generally diving to depths of 180-360 meters, with a maximum depth of 600 meters. Seal milk has a very high fat content, reaching 40-50%, which is 10-15 times that of cow's milk. Other nutrients are also higher than in cow's milk, which is one of the reasons why seal pups grow strong and plump.

Seals are found in almost all oceans worldwide, but are more common in cold waters. There are 34 species of seals in the world, totaling approximately 35 million. Antarctica is home to 6 species of seals, totaling about 32 million, accounting for 90% of the world's seal population. Clearly, Antarctica is a crucial habitat for seals.
