China Programmer's Guide: Spending more on mortgage loans, looking for a partner with the best appearance

Recently, the author discovered a "2018 Chinese Programmer Research Report". It is said that this is the valid result of interviewing 1,684 programmers. The programmers surveyed cover first-tier cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, 15 new first-tier cities such as Hangzhou and Chengdu, and 30 second-tier cities such as Xiamen, Hefei and Foshan.

The questions are very down-to-earth, such as working hours, whether you have bought a house, how you commute, whether you are married...

Let’s look at these interesting conclusions:

1. Residence

More than 70% of programmers in first-tier cities are still living a "miserable" life of renting a house

In terms of housing, programmers in new first-tier cities win. Thanks to high salaries and significantly lower housing prices than those in first-tier cities, the home ownership rate of programmers in new first-tier cities reached 27.7%, compared with 22.2% in second-tier cities and only 13.3% in first-tier cities.

Programmers in first-tier cities face relatively tough housing conditions, with more than 70% still renting and 37.3% choosing to share a house with others.

Programmers in Beijing prefer to rent in groups, while programmers in Shenzhen prefer to rent alone.

Chengdu programmers have a home ownership rate of 32.4%, which is higher than their counterparts in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hangzhou.

In Shenzhen, where the home ownership rate of programmers surveyed is only 9.1%, 79.2% of the programmers surveyed choose to rent a house, and 54.5% choose to rent a house alone.

Nearly half of programmers in Beijing choose to share a house with others, while more than half of programmers in Shenzhen rent a house alone, reflecting the significant differences in the housing rental environment between the two places.

2. Commuting

Programmers prefer green travel

61.6% of the programmers surveyed currently use public transportation such as buses and subways as their main commuting method, even though the buses and subways during rush hours in the morning and evening can turn programmers into sardines.

9.7% of programmers currently use shared bicycles as their main means of commuting, and only 7.4% of programmers drive their own cars to and from get off work.

The author recalled a joke that a senior executive of a certain factory once posted on WeChat Moments: "Before I got married, I (the woman) took a taxi to and from work. Later, my programmer husband led me astray and I started riding a shared bicycle to and from get off work every day."

Most programmers neither own a car nor plan to buy one.

Among the programmers interviewed who prefer green travel, 57.8% believe that they do not need to buy a car in the short term, and 22.3% have plans to buy a car in the near future.

Programmers in Chengdu have the highest rate of private car ownership and lead a very comfortable life.

Not only does Chengdu have the highest home ownership rate, but its programmers’ 29.7% private car ownership rate also surpasses that of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hangzhou.

25.3% of the programmers interviewed in Shanghai said that although they do not have a private car now, they want to buy one.

Guangzhou programmers are ranked first among the group least willing to buy a car.

3. Marriage and Love

70% of programmers are unmarried, and 40% of them are still single

Among programmers aged 22-30, 19.3% have completed the major life events of marriage and childbirth, the highest proportion among major professional groups.

42% of the programmers aged 22-30 are still single. The world is so big, and their suitable partner is probably lost.

Are you more picky when you are surrounded by men? A lower percentage of married female programmers than male ones.

During the Chinese New Year and other holidays, the phrase that 43.1% of male programmers of working age are most afraid of hearing is probably "Do you have a girlfriend?"

39% of the female programmers surveyed are currently in a relationship, which is higher than the proportion of men.

Compared with female programmers, male programmers are more likely to expect to get married in a shorter period of time.

20.7% of male programmers expect to get married within the next year, while only 8.2% of female programmers hold the same opinion.

35.1% of female programmers focus on themselves, are not afraid of being forced into marriage, and believe that getting married within five years is the best option.

  • Programmers in first-tier cities hope that marriage will come faster.
  • Programmers in first-tier cities are more anxious, with 23.4% expecting to get married within the next year.
  • Programmers in second-tier cities are not in a hurry, and 30% think they can do it within five years.
  • Programmers in new first-tier cities are Buddhist, and 20.5% think that you can just go with the flow and everything is fine.

“Appearance, talent and education impress me more”

Compared with the overall respondents, the programmers interviewed are more concerned about appearance, hobbies and education level, but not so much about the other party's economic level, family background, job nature, height and household registration. However, it is worth noting that in this survey result, programmers' expectations for appearance still ranked first!

4. Consumption

Compared with other groups, programmers spend more on housing

The first of the three new mountains that programmers have to bear is housing. Programmers' monthly spending on mortgage/rent accounts for 21.1% of their total expenditure, significantly higher than other expenses such as food.

Not only do they know how to make money, but they also make money make more money. The part of the programmers interviewed that they spend on financial management accounts for 15.8% of their monthly consumer expenditure, which is only lower than that of middle and senior managers in companies.

The high proportion of home purchases leads to high housing expenses for programmers in new first-tier cities.

Programmers in first-tier cities earn money, and 16.9% of their monthly expenditure is spent on financial management, and 21.2% is spent on high housing expenses in first-tier cities.

Programmers in second-tier cities spend 25.4% of their monthly expenditure on shopping or entertainment and socializing.

Programmers in new first-tier cities, where home ownership rates are higher, spend 22.1% of their spending on mortgages/rent.

5. Troubles

Programmers are more concerned about salary increases and housing pressure

The programmer group is particularly "worried". In addition to retirement and education, the interviewed programmers' concerns about many issues are higher than the overall respondents.

41.4% of programmers worry that it will be difficult to increase their salary, 41.1% of programmers think buying a house is stressful, and 38.5% of programmers worry that their personal abilities cannot be improved at work.

Buying a house depends on oneself, and more than half of female programmers are most worried about the pressure of buying a house.

51.1% of the female programmers interviewed are worried about the pressure of buying a house. At the same time, they express greater pressure than male programmers on improving their personal abilities, providing for the elderly, and salary and benefits.

34.5% of the male programmers interviewed expressed concerns about their personal health, and showed more concerns about love and marriage issues than female programmers.

Programmers in first-tier cities are more career-oriented, while those in other cities want to settle down.

Compared with the overall interviewed programmers, programmers in first-tier cities are more worried that their personal abilities cannot keep up with the job development requirements. Programmers in new first-tier cities are most concerned about the pressure of buying a house, and programmers in second-tier cities are more worried about love and marriage issues.

6. Health

Compared with other occupational groups, programmers are not in good health

63.3% of the programmers surveyed currently have some sub-health symptoms, and only 35.1% of them believe that they are in good health and not troubled by any disease. Compared with other professions, programmers can be said to be true "health refugees."

Programmers in Beijing are the most confident about their health, while programmers in Shenzhen are the most worried about their health.

45% of programmers interviewed in Beijing believe that they are in very good health.

The health of programmers in Shenzhen is the most worrying, with 70.1% of the programmers surveyed indicating that they have some sub-health symptoms.

Chronic fatigue is the most common health problem among programmers.

Frequent fatigue, cervical spondylosis, and overweight are important health problems that plague programmers.

More than 10% of the programmers interviewed suffer from problems such as insomnia and hair loss.

7. Sports

Programmers are the most nerdy people. About 1/4 of them exercise less than once a month, which is higher than other professional groups.

The body is the capital of work. 44.4% of the middle and senior managers of the surveyed companies exercise twice or more a week.

58.3% of programmers exercise once or more a week, and 23.5% of programmers exercise less than once a month.

Programmers in the capital are the least fond of exercise? Programmers in Beijing have the highest exercise frequency among all the cities surveyed.

Programmers in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu: They exercise regularly. About 40% of programmers in these three cities exercise twice or more per week.

Programmers in Hangzhou and Shenzhen: Exercise sometimes. 25.8% of Hangzhou programmers exercise once a week, 27.3% of Shenzhen programmers exercise once a week, and 24.7% of Shenzhen programmers exercise 1-3 times a month.

Beijing programmers: not much exercise, 31.6% of Beijing programmers exercise less than once a month.

Being a stay-at-home type but also being hardworking, the frequency of exercise among female programmers is polarized.

Among female programmers, 40.4% exercise more than twice a week, but 31.9% exercise less than once a month.

Among male programmers, 34.9% exercise more than twice a week, and 23% exercise once a week.

8. Working hours

Hard work is no longer a myth. The proportion of programmers working less than 40 hours a week is ***, and more than 30% of programmers work more than 50 hours a week.

The average working hours per week for the programmers interviewed are about 47.5 hours, which is only lower than that of middle and senior managers and product and operation staff.

44% of programmers work 41-50 hours per week, 33.5% of programmers work more than 50 hours per week, and 5.7% of programmers work more than 70 hours per week.

Male programmers work longer hours than female programmers, with nearly 80% working more than 40 hours a week.

The average working hours per week for male programmers is about 47.7 hours, while that for female programmers is 45.9 hours.

Among male and female programmers, the proportion of those working more than 50 hours is relatively equal.

36.2% of the female programmers surveyed work less than 40 hours per week, and only 21.5% of the male programmers surveyed work less than 40 hours.

Programmers in Shanghai work the hardest and have the longest average working hours per week.

Programmers in Shanghai are the busiest, working an average of 48.9 hours per week.

Programmers in Shenzhen are relatively idle, with an average weekly working time of 47.0 hours, and 28.6% working 40 hours or less per week.

Some programmers in Guangzhou are very busy while others are very idle. 41% of programmers in Guangzhou work more than 50 hours a week, but 24.6% work 40 hours or less per week.

9. Income

High salary is not a legend. The salary level of programmers is second only to that of middle and senior managers in enterprises.

Nearly half of programmers earn more than 10,000 yuan before tax.

In this survey, the overall income level of the programmers interviewed was second only to that of the middle and senior managers of the interviewed companies.

The salaries in Shanghai are high, and the overall income level of programmers in Shanghai is the highest.

The overall income level of Shanghai programmers interviewed is the highest, and 16.9% of Shanghai programmers earn 20,000 yuan or more per month.

More than half of programmers in Guangzhou and Chengdu earn less than 10,000 yuan per month.

Architect/System Analyst professional level programmers are highly satisfied with the current industry salary.

50% of programmers at the architect/system analyst professional level are satisfied with their current industry salary, which is higher than other professional level programmers.

Project managers are most satisfied with current industry salaries, with less than 20% being satisfied with their own salaries.

As non-first-tier cities, programmers in Hangzhou have a higher level of salary satisfaction, while programmers in Chengdu have a lower level of salary satisfaction.

43% of Hangzhou programmers are relatively satisfied or very satisfied with the current industry salary.

Shenzhen programmers are less satisfied with current industry salaries, with 18.2% expressing dissatisfaction.

10. Impression

46.1% of programmers believe that laymen always misunderstand that they are good at repairing computers

"I'm not, I didn't, don't talk nonsense": Programmers think that outsiders have a serious misunderstanding of them, saying that they are good at repairing computers, can easily develop any software, and have a dull personality and no interest.

In the eyes of non-programmers, programmers are homebodies, good at repairing computers, and like to play games when they have nothing to do, but they are not considered to be dull and uninteresting.
