What does a good copywriter usually look like?

Our company is recruiting recently.

I received a lot of resumes, so I felt a little touched.

Why do I seem like a bad boss when I’m just hiring someone for the first time?

Looking at the many youthful brushstrokes and imagining what it feels like to be a copywriter , it seems that there is a feeling that many wandering poets and writers would encounter here.

Writing copy seems to be a very desirable thing, and every friend who loves words is envious.

I can't help but think of myself in the past, when I had the same fantasy, but clients always wake you up.


Let’s not talk about some old traits, such as insight, observation, and sensitivity, which are things that everyone can understand or not.

Let’s just talk about how the copywriter should react when faced with different situations.

1. When you have no inspiration:

A good copywriter will not scratch his head, complain, wander around, make three cups of coffee and have four rounds of afternoon tea, and then shout, "Ahhh, I have no inspiration."

You should play a piece of music that emits beta waves, then pick up a book, flip through it quietly for a few dozen minutes, then walk outside, look at the flowers, plants and trees, and finally sit in front of the computer, open the information you usually collect, as well as various material websites.

Type it word by word.

After finishing, I let out a long sigh, rubbed my shoulders and neck, had a meal, and then came back to revise it for the second and third time... until I submitted it.

A competent copywriter will rely on methods rather than just inspiration.

2. When the client wants to revise the manuscript:

When a good copywriter hears that the client is revising the manuscript, he or she will not immediately open other groups, then curse and lament, saying how unlucky he or she is to have such a crappy client and that he or she has revised it eight hundred times but the client is still not satisfied. He or she will not immediately post a status message to ask for a photo and cry, saying that he or she has been bullied again, while preparing to write a resignation letter, etc.

Instead, I would gently put down the keyboard to avoid it from being innocently affected, then go out for a stroll by bike or on foot, buy a sweet drink or warm soup, look at the cats and dogs walking on the street, and after half an hour, return to the computer to look again at the manuscript I had submitted and the previous manuscript that had been revised many times.

Then, facing the customer's window, take a deep breath, and slowly type out a 100-word description of the direction of this writing, and remind the customer that this content is revised according to the last requirement. Finally, take out the previous modification records and ask the customer to directly choose the version they like.

The smiling face attached at the end expresses our sincere service and smile.

Prepare a quotation secretly behind the scenes, and if the customer indicates that changes are needed, the price will be increased.

A competent copywriter will think of ways to solve the problem.


3. When customer needs are unclear

A good copywriter, when encountering a client who cannot clearly express the spirit of what he wants to express, will not roll his eyes, think to himself that it happens again, and then immediately take out his mobile phone and start complaining to a bunch of groups that he has encountered another owner who knows nothing and can only bargain.

Instead, he touched his chest, calmed himself down, put on a smiling face, and carefully began to guide the customer to understand his needs, starting from brand positioning, product demand, characteristics and market analysis, and then gave two to three suggested directions and contents, and provided corresponding quotations.

If the customer still doesn’t understand, just open some examples, and then ask the customer whether they want to do something like this, whether they want to write content similar to a certain brand, and confirm the platform and location to be placed, and then give the final quote directly.

Of course, this quotation must be increased by 20% as consultant fees.

A competent copywriter will explore the needs of clients and guide and organize the context for them.


4. When you see someone else’s copywriting

A good copywriter, when seeing the copy written by others, does not start to criticize the copy by pointing out what is wrong with it or praising how well it is written, and then rush to forward it to others to seek their approval.

Instead, start thinking about why the copy is written in this way, what they might want to express, and what are the advantages and disadvantages of writing in this way. Observe how people react to the copy, think about how you would write it, try writing different versions, and analyze the possible impact of different writing entry points.

Finally, write down these ideas and store them in your own library.

A competent copywriter tends to appreciate more than comment.

A good copywriter will create his own material to write , instead of always feeling that what the owner gives is too little.

A good copywriter will constantly practice writing about various types of products , rather than just writing about his own industry.

A good copywriter will be accustomed to collecting, accumulating, organizing and analyzing information , rather than just looking at big brand cases compiled by others and funny copywriting that has been circulated everywhere.

A good copywriter needs to have many skills to be a good copywriter.

In fact, professionals in every position need to have skills that are not only used in this position, and most of the time they are compound professionals.

Every top player is supported by many seemingly unrelated skills.

Because we only write copy, we need to have other abilities to convince others.

We all strive to become a talent first, and then become a copywriting talent.

A talented person will understand what he lacks on the way to his goal, and then make up for what he lacks and strengthen his expertise.

There is nothing special about writing copy. What is special is our expectations and learning from ourselves.

It's simply that we are hopelessly obsessed with words.

Because this is too stupid, we must prepare more smart skills.

Only then can you do stupid things properly.
