Chinese Academy of Social Sciences: China's new energy vehicle production and sales could reach tens of millions during the 14th Five-Year Plan period

The China Industry and Enterprise Competitiveness Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the China Social Sciences Academic Press jointly released the "Industry Blue Book: China Industry Competitiveness Report (2020) No. 9". The report pointed out that China has become the country with the largest number of new energy vehicles and has built the world's largest charging facilities. The blue book estimates that during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, the total production and sales scale of new energy vehicles in China can reach 10 million vehicles.

According to the Blue Book, China's new energy vehicles have continuously ranked first in global sales during the 13th Five-Year Plan period. According to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, from 2016 to May 2020, China sold 4.04 million new energy vehicles, including 3.24 million pure electric vehicles, 790,000 plug-in hybrid vehicles, 4,600 fuel cell vehicles, 3.29 million new energy passenger vehicles, and 750,000 new energy commercial vehicles. China has always been the world's largest new energy vehicle market, with a market share of 44.8%, 49.4%, 54.6% and 50.5% in China from 2016 to 2019.

In terms of vehicle manufacturing, China has the world's largest vehicle production capacity. During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, China produced nearly 5 million new energy vehicles, of which about 80% were pure electric vehicles, 19% were plug-in hybrid vehicles and less than 1% were fuel cell vehicles; about 82% were new energy passenger vehicles and 18% were new energy commercial vehicles. In 2019, China's new energy vehicle production was 1.24 million, of which 1.02 million were pure electric vehicles.

The report pointed out that China has become the country with the largest number of new energy vehicles. In 2019, China's new energy vehicle ownership was 3.597 million, accounting for 47.7% of the world. Among them, the number of new energy passenger vehicles was 3.345 million, accounting for 46.7% of the world, and the number of new energy commercial vehicles was 247,000, accounting for 65.5% of the world.

In addition, China has built the world's largest charging facility. The Blue Book points out that the number of public charging piles reflects the guarantee capacity of the public infrastructure for new energy vehicles. By 2019, China had 516,000 public charging piles, including 215,000 fast charging piles and 301,000 slow charging piles. The Blue Book estimates that during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, the total production and sales of new energy vehicles in China could reach 10 million.
