Volvo's first pure electric car will be put into production in China and exported to the global market

According to Automotive News Europe, an informed source revealed that Volvo will produce its first pure electric vehicle in China, and the news will be officially announced at the Shanghai Auto Show which will open next week. It is reported that the first pure electric vehicle will be unveiled in 2019 and will be exported to the world after it goes into production in China.

According to people familiar with the matter, the car is built on the CMA platform jointly developed with Geely Auto and will be produced at Volvo's Luqiao plant, which is also responsible for producing the new 40 series and the first model of the Lynk & CO brand, the 01 crossover. People familiar with the matter said that Volvo's first pure electric car will be a brand new model, but did not disclose what body the car will use.

In addition, people familiar with the matter also confirmed that Volvo is also developing pure electric vehicles based on its SPA platform.

The report pointed out that the above models will help Volvo achieve its goal of cumulative sales of 1 million electric vehicles (including plug-in hybrid vehicles) by 2025. Currently, 14% of Volvo's XC90s sold worldwide are plug-in hybrid vehicles. Volvo expects that 15% of second-generation XC60 owners will choose the plug-in hybrid version.

Three major manufacturing bases work together to help Volvo achieve its goals

European Automotive News pointed out that Volvo's production of its first pure electric vehicle in China once again demonstrated its willingness to build China into a global production and export center.

In 2015, Volvo exported the long-wheelbase version of the S60 Inscription to the United States, becoming the first Western automaker to export Chinese-made vehicles overseas.

Last November, Volvo transferred the production of S90 from Sweden to China. Volvo plans to export its flagship sedan from Daqing to global markets including Europe and the United States. According to relevant media reports, the S90 long-wheelbase version produced by Volvo Daqing was officially exported to the United States on April 12, with the first batch of 400 vehicles, which will land in the US market in June this year. At the same time, Volvo also announced that the current and next-generation 60 series mid-size cars will be produced in the Chengdu plant.

Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson said in November last year that "the three major vehicle manufacturing bases in China (Chengdu, Luqiao and Daqing) are equipped with specific production lines (new generation SPA 90 series, SPA 60 series and CMA 40 series products), which can establish an efficient production structure and thus ensure a solid foundation for future growth."

European Automotive News pointed out that Volvo hopes to achieve two major goals by increasing production in China: sales in China will increase to 200,000 vehicles in 2020 (90,930 vehicles last year) and global sales will reach 800,000 vehicles in 2020 (534,332 vehicles last year). Most of last year's global sales were produced at the Torslanda plant in Sweden and the Ghent plant in Belgium.

However, Volvo did not disclose specific production figures in China. Samuelsson only said that he hoped that one-third of the 800,000 global sales target for 2020 would be produced in China.
