The THAAD system is an important part of the new missile defense plan of the United States. It is mainly used to intercept high-altitude missiles and adopts a comprehensive early warning method of satellite, infrared and radar. The system consists of interceptor missiles, vehicle-mounted launchers, ground radars, and combat management and command, control, communication and intelligence systems. The THAAD system has two core components. One is the interceptor missile, commonly known as KKV, which consists of a booster, a kinetic interceptor and a fairing. It is said that it can intercept Chinese ballistic missiles. The second is the AN/TPY-2 active phased array radar, which is said to be able to monitor half of China and part of the Far East. Therefore, the strong backlash from China and Russia is also reasonable.
The THAAD defense system consists of a launcher carrying eight interceptors, the AN/TPY-2 X-band radar, a fire control and communication system (TFCC) and a combat management system. Lockheed Martin Space Defense, Caterpillar Defense and Aerospace are the main contractors for the launcher and interceptors, Raytheon is the main contractor for the AN/TPY-2 radar, and Boeing, Honeywell and Rocketdyne are the contractors for the management and command system.
