General Motors launches ultra-fast charging system, charging in 10 minutes and driving 290 kilometers

GM's electric vehicles will gain super-fast charging capabilities. GM is developing a 400-kW ultra-fast charging system (XFC). This will allow GM's future electric vehicles to replenish enough energy in less than 10 minutes to support a range of 290 kilometers.

GM is working with Delta Electronics USA Inc. to develop the charging system in a three-year, $7 million project.

Delta said that the system is developed based on solid-state transformer (SST) technology, "the weight is one-fourth of the ordinary DC fast charging system and the size is half of it." The transmission efficiency of this ultra-fast charging system is expected to reach 96.5%, and it can provide 29 kilometers of power per minute.

Currently, the Chevrolet Bolt's fast charging capability is not satisfactory. Through a DC fast charging system rated at 90 kW, the vehicle can only replenish its battery life in 30 minutes to maintain its range of about 145 kilometers.

Tesla said its second-generation Supercharger (which has a maximum power of 135 kW and the hardware is rated at 120 kW) can fully charge its electric vehicles in 30 minutes. Tesla is also planning to develop a third-generation Supercharger system with a maximum power of 200-250 kW.

General Motors hopes to make a comeback with its ultra-fast charging system.

Tesla's current 120-kW supercharging system can add 9.6 kilometers of range to the vehicle per minute, while GM's ultra-fast charging system will charge three times faster. Porsche has said it will use a 350-kW DC fast charging system to provide its electric sports car Taycan with a charging efficiency of 20 kilometers per minute.

The above technology will be installed in 20 of its electric vehicles around 2023. According to the latest mid-term plan announced by the automaker last year, GM will "add two new electric vehicles based on the Bolt platform within 18 months and add 18 new electric vehicles based on the new platform within the next five years." This means that all new electric vehicles launched by GM in the future will have this kind of fast charging capability.
