Tesla CEO Musk: China has become the global leader in electric vehicle applications

Tesla's Shanghai Super Factory officially started construction today. Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Shanghai Municipal Party Committee Deputy Secretary and Mayor Ying Yong, Shanghai Vice Mayor Wu Qing, Shanghai Municipal Government, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, National Development and Reform Commission, Tesla and other relevant leaders attended the groundbreaking ceremony. Previously, Tesla announced that it would learn from the experience of the continuous increase in Model 3 production capacity in North America to accelerate the construction of the Shanghai Super Factory. The groundbreaking ceremony of the Shanghai Super Factory held today is an important milestone.

A few days ago, Tesla announced that it would officially open Model 3 electric car options to Chinese customers. The delivery of new orders is expected to start from March 2019, and the delivery of early pre-orders will start as early as February.

The Shanghai Super Factory will produce Model 3 electric vehicles and future new models for the Chinese market. After the factory is completed, it is planned to produce about 3,000 Model 3 electric vehicles per week in the initial stage, and the annual output will climb to 500,000 pure electric vehicles after it is fully operational.

"China has become a global leader in electric vehicle applications. Tesla's mission is to 'accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy', and the Chinese market is very important for us to achieve this vision," said Elon Musk. "In the past six years, Tesla has opened 60 operating sites in China, built more than 1,500 super charging piles and more than 1,850 destination charging piles. A few days ago, we announced the official launch of Model 3 electric vehicles in China. Chinese consumers can immediately choose Model 3 and receive vehicle delivery in the next few weeks. Today, the groundbreaking ceremony of the Shanghai Super Factory is an example of Tesla's commitment to continue to increase investment in the Chinese market."

Earlier today, Musk said on Twitter that the Shanghai factory will produce entry-level Model 3 and Model Y for Greater China; all other Model S and Model X, as well as high-end Model 3 and Model Y will still be produced by the US factory.
