Australia's electric vehicle sales hit a record high in March 2024, with a total of 10,464 units sold

Tesla CEO Musk forwarded a post from electric vehicle analyst Sawyer Merritt on the X platform: In March this year, electric vehicle sales in Australia hit a record high, and Tesla Model Y once again became the best-selling electric vehicle. Merritt shared a report from the Australian electric vehicle website The Driven. Here are the details of the report:

Electric vehicle sales in Australia hit a new monthly record in March, exceeding 10,000 for the second consecutive month, although their share of the new car market fell slightly as sales of fuel-powered cars also hit a new high in Australia.

Figures released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) showed 10,464 electric vehicle sales in March, excluding another 84 sales by Polestar, which withdrew from the association in protest of the FCAI's opposition to Australia's proposed vehicle emissions standards.

If Polestar is included, total electric vehicle sales in Australia would have reached 10,548 in March, although market share would have fallen slightly to 9.5% from 9.6% in February.

Tesla's sales were strong again, with both the Model Y and the new Model 3 performing well, pushing the company to become the sixth best-selling car brand in Australia, its highest position to date.

Model Y topped the sales charts for electric vehicles in March with 4,379 units sold, second only to the Ford Ranger ute and Toyota Rav4 in the overall market.

In the electric vehicle sector, the all-new Model 3 ranked second with sales of 1,638 units, having previously set a sales record of 3,593 units in February.

Other notable electric car models include BYD Atto 3 with sales of 1,044 units, followed by BYD Seal with sales of 365 units, and MG’s MG4 rounding out the top five electric car rankings with sales of 352 units.
