Recently, many netizens said that their iPhones had inexplicably shut down automatically, but they could not find any faults when they went to the repair shop. The cause of all this was nothing else but the recent nationwide cold wave and low temperature. According to Apple's official website, iPhone, iPad, iPod, and Apple Watch have strict operating environment temperature requirements, preferably between 0~35℃, and MacBook notebooks are more stringent, requiring 10~35℃. At present, many places in the north have dropped below -10℃, and the south is generally below 0℃, which is much lower than the minimum requirements of iPhones. But don't worry too much, because this will not cause harm to the iPhone itself, because automatic shutdown itself is a self-protection mechanism. Once the surrounding environment returns to the normal range, such as taking it indoors or putting it in your pocket, the iPhone can continue to be used normally. If you look deeper, it is not the iPhone that is affected by the temperature, but the lithium-ion battery inside it. Its optimal operating environment temperature is exactly 0~35℃ as specified by Apple, and the optimal non-operating temperature (i.e. storage temperature) is -20~45℃. At normal temperature, the lithium ions in the battery will maintain good activity, and the electrolyte will produce a potential difference between the positive and negative electrodes through changes in chemical reactions, thereby generating current. After the temperature drops below 0°C, the ion diffusion of the positive and negative electrodes becomes poor, and the discharge capacity becomes weaker. It looks like the battery is out of power, and the iPhone will automatically shut down. Android phones also use lithium-ion batteries, which are also affected by low temperatures. But the difference is that Apple's temperature detection mechanism is more stringent. As long as the environment is below 0°C, it will trigger the automatic shutdown mechanism, and the battery self-protection temperature of many Android phones is set lower, so it appears to be more "low temperature resistant". In addition, some Android phones have high heat generation and poor heat dissipation (such as Snapdragon 810), which can also act as "warm babies" in winter, making it less likely to automatically shut down at low temperatures. On the other hand, in addition to the fact that discharge is affected by low temperatures, the charging of lithium-ion batteries is also the same, so when it is very cold, the iPhone may not be able to charge at all.
