According to foreign media reports, mobile spam is increasing. However, Apple iPhone still has many problems in dealing with mobile spam and has not been able to effectively prevent spam calls. There is no doubt that harassing calls have become a problem for mobile communications. In particular, the number of fraudulent calls has increased sharply every year. According to statistics, the number of harassing calls this year has increased by 65% year-on-year. In this year's telephone fraud in the name of the US Internal Revenue Service, a total of 6,400 users were deceived, and the amount involved was as high as 36.5 million US dollars. The scammers claimed to be staff of the US Internal Revenue Service on the phone and asked users to pay back taxes. The increasing number of mobile spam (calls, text messages, and emails) can be explained by economic formulas. For spammers, the benefits of fraud are constantly increasing, while the costs are constantly decreasing. The broad regulatory penalties and complex technologies provide objective conditions for criminals to commit fraud, and the near-zero cost of call charges has also become an objective promoter of fraud. In particular, mobile phone calls are a frequently used medium for fraud, which is the only communication method that fails to effectively protect users. Protection in areas such as emails and websites is much more advanced. Now, Apple has finally acknowledged the spam problem on iPhones and promised to provide more technical conditions for users to control incoming calls. At the Worldwide Developers Conference this month, Apple introduced a new feature in iOS 10 called Call Directory extension, which allows application developers to develop functions such as filtering incoming calls. Although Apple has provided user protection functions for fraudulent calls before, they are relatively weak. Apple needs to reach the same level as Google Android in this regard. Apple's closed ecosystem Android itself is an open system. Under user permissions, when there is an incoming call, the registered application will be notified, so that it can connect with its own services to determine the name and category of the incoming call, and then display the relevant information of the call on the screen. Apple's iOS system cannot do this. Similar to other aspects of the iOS operating system, the mobile platform is not open to applications. For application developers, the solution is to create a directory of known harassing calls. The disadvantage is that only 1,000 phone numbers can be added to it. When the number of phone numbers exceeds 1,000, the 1,000 most harmful phone numbers will be selected, which is far from enough. The Call Directory extension in iOS 10 streamlines this process. Of course, developers still cannot obtain permission for incoming call notifications. But with the new iOS feature, developers' apps can provide two lists of phone numbers when there is an incoming call: a blocked list and an authenticated list. Although Apple has not announced the capacity of each list, developers say that the number of phone numbers will exceed 100,000. Although it is a great improvement, it does not fundamentally solve the problem of phone harassment. Since there are more than 6 billion mobile phone numbers worldwide, scammers often use new numbers, and the number of 100,000 is not worth mentioning. Long-standing problems Ideally, Apple can provide the same function as Google, but to truly eradicate the problem of mobile spam, it is still necessary to establish protection measures within the internal networks of mobile operators. Protection based on the communication network is the only security measure because it is the only way for mobile spam to be transmitted. Progress in this regard is still slow. Last year, the Federal Communications Commission required telephone companies to filter those automatic calls if users request it. Despite the relevant regulations, operators have been slow to act. The Telecommunications Association of the United States, which represents the interests of operators, said, "There is no single technical solution to this problem, especially when robocalls are widely made using fake numbers." Based on this, for consumers, the technical treatment of mobile phone spam by mobile phone manufacturers is the best defense measure. Apple has taken the right step in the relevant improvements on iOS10, but there is still a certain gap from consumer demand. We look forward to its real realization of effective filtering of mobile phone spam on iOS11.
