Xiaomi Notebook Air: The hard part is not just the ridiculous PPT

On July 27, Xiaomi, a well-known domestic mobile phone manufacturer, released its first laptop: Air.

Xiaomi Notebook Air has two models, Air 13.3-inch and Air 12.5-inch. The configuration is as shown in the figure below, so I won't describe it anymore. Not long ago, I expressed my pessimism about Xiaomi notebooks in my article, but after taking a closer look at the appearance, performance and price of Air, I found that Xiaomi did treat their first notebook with care . Of course, "care" and "sincerity" are different. I personally think that Air is a bit distorted in some aspects to cater to consumers. Let's talk about Xiaomi notebooks in my eyes. Of course, as someone who is good at configuration, I will mainly talk about the configuration of Air. From the beginning, the 12.5-inch small Air uses the Core M3-6Y30 processor. The M series is Intel Core's ultra-low power series processor, and the M3-6Y30 is the lowest-end model. The main frequency is 0.9~2.2GHz, and the TDP is 4.5W. This processor is still no problem in dealing with daily office, Internet and audio and video, and the low power consumption ensures battery life. You should know that the small-sized Air is only equipped with a 37Whr battery. According to Xiaomi's official announcement, the small-sized Air can last for 9.5 hours of online video playback, 7.5 hours of local video playback, and 7.5 hours of web browsing, which is a decent performance. The small-sized Air is not equipped with a separate graphics card, but uses the core graphics card HD 515. HD 515 is still stronger than HD 4400 in performance, so it is completely fine to play LOL. The low-power CPU plus the core graphics make the whole machine very low in heat, so this small Air uses fanless passive cooling, plus the metal shell conducts heat, I believe that heat dissipation is not a problem. 4G DDR3L memory and 128G SATA SSD can be said to be in line with its size and price. It is very suitable for white-collar workers who go out to work, and it is no problem to use it occasionally to get the first victory. In fact, it is still quite troublesome to buy a normal notebook at a price of 3,000. It is even more difficult to pick out a notebook that is all metal, thin and light, functional, and designed for business people, so this small Air still makes me shine. Until I saw the previously released Lenovo Xiaoxin Air 12: the same configuration, 38 watt-hour battery, the same full metal shell, fanless, 12.2 inches, and even the name is the same ! The price is 2999. Of course, the small Air is still 5 mm thinner and 1.7 kg lighter than the Xiaoxin Air 12. Xiaomi aimed very accurately, but it still shook when it fired . I don’t know if Xiaomi’s new voice can cover Lenovo’s big brother. If you think that the small Air is not competitive in the low-end market, then the big Air must be more controversial. Putting the i5 6200U and GTX 940MX independent graphics into such a small shell is undoubtedly a challenge to most notebook manufacturers on the market. In my impression, this configuration and design last appeared in the Surface Book, which costs 10,000 yuan. The i5 6200U is a low-voltage processor based on the Skylake architecture, with a main frequency of 2.3~2.8GHz and a TDP (power consumption) of 15W, and its performance is still good. GT 940MX is an upgraded version of GT 940M, the main difference is that it supports DX 12 and GDDR5 memory. Big Air uses 1G GDDR5 memory. Although GT 940MX is not as good as GT 950M, it can run most online games smoothly at 1080P. LOL is not mentioned. Although Overwatch cannot be opened to the highest quality, it is still OK to play at medium quality. At the same time, Big Air is equipped with 8G DDR4 2133 memory, which is enough; the key is this 256G PCI-E x4 SSD, which is the finishing touch. The price of 4999 is not cheap from the configuration alone, but there are not many other products that can buy a full metal body, light and thin design, fashionable appearance, and such performance for 4999. In general, Big Air is more suitable for users who have certain requirements for appearance, weight, thickness and performance, and is suitable for audio and video and online game users with low requirements. "What's wrong with you today, Tom? Why don't you complain about Air? Aren't you the one who likes to find fault?" Don't worry, the place to complain is coming. Next, I will talk about my dissatisfaction and doubts about Air from four aspects: The first aspect I want to talk about is the appearance. The appearance of the big and small Air is very similar: all-metal body; gold and silver; there is no logo or texture on the A side, and the only logo is printed below the screen on the B side, which is the first time I have seen it in a notebook. Many people have imagined how ugly it would be if Xiaomi's logo was printed on the A side, but now they are completely relieved. Not making any design on the A side is actually a means to reduce costs and create differentiation, which is really a good trick. At first glance, it feels very plain, especially the gold version, which actually looks a bit literary. This is also the most direct reason why Tom Cruise changed my view of Xiaomi notebooks. But when you turn it over and take a look at the D side, you will dispel all the above fantasies. 5 anti-skid pads and 7 exposed screws, it is hard to say how this seemingly neat D side was destroyed. The side adopts a relatively flat design, and the edge curvature is not large, so it does not look as thin and light as advertised, but it still saves a lot in manufacturing process and cost. The 13.3-inch Air has two USB 3.0 and one Type-C interface, and is equipped with an HDMI and 3.5mm for video and audio. Thanks to the flat body, the interface spacing is also relatively large. Although there are not many interfaces, it should be quite convenient to use. The 12.5-inch version has reduced one USB 3.0. This is a bit difficult to say. For example, when I type, I usually have to plug in a mouse and keyboard. If there is only one USB interface, I must expand the docking station. I have to consider it carefully before I start. Oh, by the way, the adapter is a Type-C interface. In addition to charging, the adapter also has 2 HDMI interfaces and 3 USB interfaces. After plugging in the adapter, the interface is still sufficient. Another difference is that the headphone jack is moved closer to the wrist. I have been thinking about this change. I don’t know if it will get in the way. Anyway, I don’t like it very much as I often type. The backlit keyboard is a highlight, and the practicality index has soared, but it’s a pity that the brightness is fixed at 3 nit. The edge of the keycap is rounded, which is not noticeable from a distance, but it will look fatter when you look closely, and the whole keyboard looks unrefined. The arrow keys compress the up and down keys. Although many manufacturers do this, I don’t like any compression of the arrow keys, especially this kind of compression of the up and down keys. I am used to desktop keyboards and it is difficult for me to accept it. The keycap has a certain curvature, and the touch should be good, but the golden curved keycap looks a bit dirty because of the shadow. The official key travel is called 1.3mm, which is not long. However, for the sake of thinness, this sacrifice is acceptable. After all, people who often type will have a separate keyboard. Judging from the picture, the key travel is longer than that of Macbook, and students who are used to Macbook should feel good. The second aspect to talk about is the heat dissipation of the big Air. Although it is better to wait for the evaluation to come out before talking about the heat dissipation problem, I really can't help but put a big question mark in my heart. The i5 processor plus the independent graphics card are stuffed in such a small size, and heat dissipation is indeed a difficult point. Let's take a look at the heat dissipation design of the big Air first: How about it, does it look familiar? I once complained bitterly in an article about the behavior of connecting the CPU and GPU with a heat pipe for centralized heating. Immediately, a vivid example came out. What's the fuss? And this dual fan, no, how can you have dual fans like this? I really don't understand it. The picture is a screenshot from Xiaomi's official website. The copy says "send the heat from the left to the right fan for centralized exhaust." In fact, it's okay, because the air outlet is a shaft instead of the side, otherwise the mouse hand will be cooked. The heat dissipation area spans a large range, and the location of the heat source still depends on the evaluation results. However, if there is really a problem with heat dissipation, the heat source is likely to appear in the WASD area, and then it's really over. However, Xiaomi specially displayed the heat dissipation design on the promotional webpage, which seems to be quite confident, after all, the CPU and graphics card used are not top-notch. It is recommended to wait for the evaluation results to come out before considering buying. The third aspect I want to talk about is the "care" and "sincerity" mentioned at the beginning. In fact, the performance of the Big Air is in a slightly awkward position, because the price of 5,000 is full of various gaming laptops, and if you are a gamer, it is difficult to choose a low-end product like GT 940MX. But Xiaomi obviously doesn't want to give up this piece of fat meat, after all, gaming laptops are the mainstay of notebooks. Regardless of the difficulty of heat dissipation and thickness, i5 and independent graphics cards have to squeeze in, which makes the positioning of the Big Air very vague: you don't know whether to buy it for gaming or office work. The small screen, stylish shape, and thin design make it look like a business notebook; the performance that is not as good as the best but better than the worst makes it a bit like a gaming notebook. I think the configuration of the Big Air is a bit trying to please newbies, which is why I say Xiaomi is "attentive" but not "sincere". Although the thinness of gaming laptops is a very popular direction recently, I think the time is still not right. Looking at the representative Razer Blade series gaming laptops in this regard, and comparing them with the vast majority of gaming laptops on the market, we find that thick ones are still the best for guaranteeing gaming experience. Of course, all this must also take into account the needs of the market, and the final assessment will also depend on the market's acceptance and user satisfaction. I also hope that things are not as bleak as I think, but that such a configuration can find its place. The fourth point has nothing to do with the notebook itself, and I want to complain about Xiaomi. The following remarks are objective and fair in my mind, and may cause dissatisfaction among Mi fans, so please avoid them... First of all, I want to say that the official website introduction page of Xiaomi notebooks that I read when preparing this article looks quite impressive to laymen, but in fact, the copy is vague and the logic is confusing. The biggest problem appears on this page: This is a page in the "Design" column. I don't know what the professional term is, anyway, the copy will be switched many times on the same page, and after switching, you can't turn to the next page! This is a bug. I have used Chrome and Edge, and I can't turn the page. In fact, this web design can be said to be copied from Apple, and a lot of content has been added. The classification is not clear, and there are bugs. I don't know if this can reflect Xiaomi's attitude. On the other hand, it is about Xiaomi's promotion of Air. I didn't watch the live broadcast of the press conference, I was afraid it would be shocking, and it turned out that it was indeed shocking on the Internet, mainly because it was very tacky. When promoting the game performance, the dream of 300 million primary school students to cross the rice noodles was put on the stage! Okay, I will assume that your audience is children, okay, then how do you explain the next part? When promoting the thinness and lightness, the comparison used was a Macbook and a coin. Here comes the shocking part: At first glance, it is a very ordinary coin comparison picture, with a Macbook on the left and a large Air on the right. A closer look reveals that the front of the Macbook body, which is the thickest part, is compared to the tail of the Air, which is the thinnest part. Maybe this is a common promotional method, I don't know. Anyway, as a nitpicker, if I want to like a brand, that brand and its products must not have any flaws. Especially in the heart.
