Tesla terminated its contract with self-driving technology company and will no longer update related hardware

Recently, news about Tesla's self-driving car accidents has been frequently reported in the media, one of which resulted in the death of the people in the car.

While Tesla was trying hard to maintain the reliability of its own autopilot function, it unexpectedly caught fire in its backyard. The supplier of this function, Israel's Mobileye, announced that it had terminated its contract with Tesla and refused to take the blame for the autopilot accidents of Model S and Model X. The Wall Street Journal reported that Mobileye, the world's largest manufacturer of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), announced that it would terminate its cooperation with Tesla and would no longer provide computer chips and algorithms for Tesla's autopilot system Autopilot in the future. The official statement provided by Mobileye to the Wall Street Journal pointed out: "The EyeQ3 chip will be the last cooperation between Mobileye and Tesla. However, we will continue to support and maintain the existing Tesla autopilot product project Tesla Autopilot, including some recent major function upgrades, including anti-collision response optimization, automatic steering optimization, etc., but in terms of hardware, we will no longer have any updates for Tesla." Mobileye believes that Tesla's autopilot system has not fulfilled its due warning obligations in the accidents that have already occurred. Mobileye said that their system is not designed to always monitor vehicles inserted in front, but their next generation of products will be able to achieve this function. It is understood that Mobileye will launch an updated next-generation system EyeQ4 in 2018, and it is expected that its ability to detect certain objects will be further improved in the new system. In fact, in addition to Tesla, Mobileye has signed camera supply agreements with more than a dozen automakers, of which orders from GM, Nissan, BMW and Hyundai Motor account for more than 60% of Mobileye's total sales. But Wall Street analysts said that the cooperation with Tesla made them pay attention to the company Mobileye. Mobileye said that the contract revenue with Tesla only accounted for about 1% of its total revenue. The company's revenue in the second quarter reached US$83.5 million and its profit was US$26.9 million. It is not clear when mobileye's current contract with Tesla will end. But the sudden "breakup" of the two companies really surprised the industry.
