The competition for multi-core smartphones stalls, putting MediaTek at a disadvantage

As mobile phone hardware performance shows signs of oversupply, foreign media believe that the multi-core war has reached a dead end. Mobile phone companies and users will focus on appearance design, manufacturing process, AMOLED LCD screen, shooting and other aspects. This is not good for MediaTek because its competitive advantage is its advantage in multi-core.

In the 3G era, MediaTek has always been leading the development of multi-core technology, until it was forced to adopt ARM's public version core to develop Snapdragon 810 due to the inability of Qualcomm's own architecture to keep up with the development progress on the octa-core. However, this chip was deeply troubled by heat, which caused the shipment volume of its high-end chip Snapdragon 8XX series to plummet by 60% last year. Last year, MediaTek further developed technologies such as deca-core and triple architecture to lead the development of multi-core technology. The helio X30 currently under development is also a deca-core, but with a quadruple architecture, which reduces power consumption through multiple architectures. MediaTek's technical advantage in multi-core is unquestionable. Qualcomm's high-end chip Snapdragon 820, launched at the end of last year, returned to its own architecture with only four cores, while Apple, which has been leading the market development, only uses dual-core. The industry has gradually realized that multi-core is not very meaningful for mobile phones, which is obviously not good for MediaTek. In fact, for a mobile phone chip, in addition to the processor core, the demand for baseband technology has been increasing due to the development of wireless communication technology. The importance of GPU is also increasing due to the needs of games and VR applications. The comprehensive performance is becoming more important. A mobile phone needs the comprehensive performance of the chip rather than just the processor to obtain an excellent experience. It is precisely in these aspects that MediaTek's technology is relatively backward. Among the current mobile phone chip companies, MediaTek's baseband technology lags behind Qualcomm, Samsung, Huawei HiSilicon, and even Spreadtrum . The former three have launched basebands that support LTE Cat12/Cat13, and the latter has launched basebands that support LTE Cat7 technology. MediaTek can only support LTE Cat6 technology at most. China Mobile is about to require mobile phone companies to support LTE Cat7 technology, which is of course not good for MediaTek. In terms of GPU, Qualcomm has the strongest technology. Its Adreno GPU performance ranks first in the industry, even surpassing Apple. Samsung, with its advantages in semiconductor manufacturing process and chip design technology, can stack more cores, although it uses a common GPU like Huawei HiSilicon and MediaTek. Therefore, the GPU performance of its high-end chip Exynos8890 is close to Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820, but much stronger than Huawei HiSilicon and MediaTek. As domestic mobile phones realize the problem of excess hardware performance, the current mid-to-high-end mobile phones launched by domestic mobile phones are more inclined to use Qualcomm's mid-range chips such as the Snapdragon 65X chip, even though the comprehensive performance of such chips also exceeds MediaTek's high-end chip helio X20 in some aspects. The multi-core competition is stalled, MediaTek's unique advantages cannot be brought into play, and its technology in other aspects is far behind Qualcomm, making it difficult for it to enter the high-end market and put it in an unfavorable competitive position. Of course, this is not a good thing for Qualcomm. Since domestic mobile phones do not have a strong demand for high-end chips and prefer to use mid-to-low-end chips, it is also forced to join the chip price war and reduce the price of chips.
