Intel mobile processors are back! The rebirth of x86 mobile phones
According to foreign media (PCWorld), although Intel has stopped making Atom chips for smartphones, its partners are still working hard. Chinese chipmaker Spreadtrum is still making x86 mobile phone chips using the Atom architecture called "Airmont". Spreadtrum plans to release an eight-core Atom chip for smartphones in the second half of this year. Smartphone manufacturers can use this chip called "Spreadtrum SC9861G-IA" in mid-range phones in the future. It has a PowerVR GT7200 graphics core and supports 4K video and resolutions up to 2560x1440. It is much more powerful than the original Atom chip made by Intel. At the ongoing World Mobile Communications Conference, Intel showed a mobile phone using this chip at its booth. At the same time, Intel also mentioned the idea of making smartphone chips again . Aicha Evans, senior vice president and general manager of Intel's Communications and Devices Group, said in an interview at MWC that Intel hopes to make chips for any device that needs to be connected, and smartphones may also be included. Intel's vision for smartphones is unclear, but Evans said Intel will customize chips based on customer needs. Intel's current focus is on Internet of Things (IoT) devices, which is a bigger opportunity than smartphones. After a belated attempt to enter the smartphone market, Intel announced in May last year that it would stop producing Atom mobile chips. Since then, Intel has focused on new areas such as IoT, data centers, storage, gaming PCs and virtual reality. Spreadtrum may show its updated Atom architecture chips at the Intel booth. The latest architecture is Goldmont, which is also seen in Pentium and Celeron PC processors and tablet processors codenamed Apollo Lake. Intel is also using Goldmont architecture in new Atom chips for IoT devices. Intel partnered with Spreadtrum in 2014 to produce various Atom smart chips for the Chinese market. Intel has also had a similar partnership with China's Rockchip Microelectronics and said it will continue to respect these partnerships. Rockchip is producing Atom chips for IoT devices, and these processors end with the letters RK.
