DeskTime: By the end of 2024, the penetration rate of ChatGPT in global offices will reach 76%.

A new study from DeskTime found that the use of artificial intelligence in the workplace is increasing. By the end of 2024, 76% of offices around the world will use ChatGPT. The data shows that artificial intelligence tools are rapidly maturing and becoming a core part of personal and departmental workflows, and companies are eager to embrace the benefits of artificial intelligence.

Personal AI usage grows significantly in 2024. By the end of the year, 34.9% of employees use ChatGPT. This is a considerable improvement compared to 19.1% in December 2023. This means that the adoption of generative AI in the workforce has almost doubled in the past year.

Not only are more people using ChatGPT, but they are also spending more time on it. The time employees spend on ChatGPT in 2024 has increased by 37.2% compared to 2023. When other popular AI tools are included, a 50% increase in time spent on AI tools can be observed.

The growing penetration of AI in the workplace: Examples from four major economies

DeskTime’s research took a closer look at ChatGPT adoption in four major economies: India, Mexico, Spain, and the United States.

While every country saw double-digit growth in employee AI usage, Mexico and India made the biggest strides, increasing by 19.93% and 19.26%, respectively. Meanwhile, the United States saw slower adoption, increasing by just 11.19%.

India also stands out as a clear leader globally in the adoption of ChatGPT, with more than half of employees using AI in their office work, covering more than 90% of offices in the country.

The doubling of the number of employees using ChatGPT is significant because it marks a new phase in the AI lifecycle, where AI is no longer a new technology used by early adopters, but a mature tool that is steadily penetrating multiple workflows. The growing adoption rate shows that one-third of people worldwide have found ways to improve their professional performance through AI.
