July 15, 2017 - Over the past decade, Facebook has gradually become the center of the Internet for many American users. However, Facebook brings too much information to people, while also lacking many of the tools they need. The US media lists six reasons why users hate Facebook, and how to solve these problems. Problem 1: I keep seeing content in my message stream that I don’t care about, sometimes multiple times. Facebook tracks user behavior on its services, as well as other apps and websites, and then selects content and ads to present to users. Facebook believes that this will be the content that users are most interested in. However, this judgment from machine algorithms is often inaccurate. The good news is that Facebook is giving users more power. Last week, Facebook launched a feature that helps users prioritize content posted by their most important friends. In the iPhone app, the redesigned news feed preference panel will even recommend the most interesting friends to users. On the web and Android apps, when users visit other people's homepages, if they choose to follow them, they will see the "View First" option. After clicking this option, users can view their content first. However, this does not solve the problem of users seeing the same content multiple times. Facebook needs to figure out why users see the same content multiple times (actually it is because someone commented or liked it). More importantly, Facebook needs to provide a way to solve this problem. However, users can currently avoid seeing duplicate content through manual operations. On the web, users can click "Hide content" in the menu in the upper right corner of the content. In the mobile app, users can select the "I don't want to see this content" option. Users can also use the same method to filter content from friends they don't follow very much. After hiding a piece of content, users can select the "Reduce content from xx" option. Of course, users can also unfollow someone. Facebook's "unfollow" is not the same as unfriending, and the other party will not know about this operation. Question 2: Is it too much to ask Facebook to provide a chronological news feed containing all the content posted by friends? Facebook doesn't want you to look at the "recent" feed, which is a chronological list of everything your friends have posted. Facebook is very determined to let you focus on the edited "popular" feed. Even if you manually switch to a different type of feed, Facebook will revert to the default setting the next day. On the web, this problem is not difficult to solve. Through a plug-in called Social Fixer, users can set the time-ordered "recent" message stream as the default selection. In addition, this plug-in can also filter the "recent" message stream. For example, users can filter all the technology websites they follow and display the messages posted by these accounts in a separate tab. Question 3: Why is there only “like” but no “dislike”? The bad news is that Facebook is unlikely to offer a "dislike" button. Mark Zuckerberg seems to think that this could cause great harm. However, there are still ways to express your disagreement or even ignore the bad content. If a user wants to publicly tell others that they don't like a piece of content, they can post a "thumbs down" emoji in the comment. On the web, users can click the smiley face button in the comment area and search for the "disgust" emoji. In the mobile app, users can download the "Like" emoji package and find this emoji. It's also easy to tell Facebook that you don't like a piece of content. After clicking "Hide content" or "I don't want to see this content," users can tell Facebook that the reason they don't like it is because of the type of content or the person who posted it. Facebook will then show less of that content. If a user doesn't like a certain topic, such as content about the 2016 US election, they can use Social Fixer to filter by keyword. Question 4: All my comments are public. Is there no privacy setting for comments? Facebook's comment feature does not support privacy settings. Facebook confirmed that if a user likes or comments on a piece of content, everyone can see the user's actions below the content. What's worse is that Facebook will recommend such content to the user's friends. So when you plan to like or comment on a piece of content, you first need to check who can see it. If the content is public, then everyone can see it. (All brand pages are public.) In addition, users should also check Facebook's privacy settings to ensure that they are only sharing content with the people they want. Question 5: Has Facebook become a billboard? There are too many ads, many of which I am not interested in. Users can't completely get rid of ads, but they can take steps to keep ads within an acceptable range. Next to sponsored content, users can click on a drop-down menu to tell Facebook that they want to block all ads from a certain company, or that they have purchased products from a certain company, or that they want to reduce the number of such ads. Users can also visit the website www.aboutads.info/choices on a computer to prevent websites from tracking them. In this case, when users visit the Amazon website, they will not see a large number of Amazon-related ads on Facebook. On Facebook, users can close individual ads or block all ads through plugins such as Facebook Ad Block. At the same time, users can also use Social Fixer to make the interface more refreshing. Question 6: Please stop sending so many message notifications! Facebook sends too many notifications. You get email and smartphone notifications when someone tags you in a photo or comments on your content. Facebook should provide a way to turn off all of these notifications. Currently, users can turn off notifications related to a piece of content in the menu next to the content. In addition, users can also turn off notifications related to games and apps through the settings menu. |
