Jack Ma, whom Wang Jianlin couldn't handle, came to Alibaba Pictures to integrate the global entertainment industry with Spielberg

In international economic activities, China has long served as an exporter of cheap labor, performing low-value-added, low-level work. Similarly, in the field of cultural communication such as movies and readings, China has not been able to escape the embarrassing situation of unilaterally accepting imports, although the Chinese government has never stopped vigorously supporting cultural undertakings.

As China takes advantage of the Internet era, the demographic dividend advantage gradually emerges, and China's economy enters the fast lane, and its international economic status rises rapidly. However, unlike traditional industries and the Internet industry, China's film and entertainment industries are immature and have not formed an effective and mature ecological chain system. China's film market is getting bigger and bigger, but Chinese films have entered a self-congratulatory vicious circle of bad films.

In fact, this problem is not difficult to solve. The simplest way is to invest in foreign film groups and use the mature foreign film industry to solve this problem. In recent years, with the substantial appreciation of the RMB, the purchasing power of the RMB has also risen, and the wave of Chinese capital's global acquisitions has begun.

Wang Jianlin's plan to "invade" Hollywood is thwarted

Wanda Group has always had the ambition to expand its film industry, and Wang Jianlin has repeatedly expressed his willingness to enter Hollywood. Wang Jianlin has been negotiating with several Hollywood film industry giants on cooperation-related matters for a long time.

It is reported that Wanda was actively promoting the transaction with Paramount, intending to acquire part of Paramount's shares and gain the right to speak in Hollywood. However, with the exit of Philippe Dauman, the former president of Viacom , the transaction was stranded.

Even the Wall Street Journal reported on October 4 that 16 members of the U.S. House of Representatives submitted a letter to the Government Accountability Office on September 15, saying that Wanda Group was conducting a series of negotiations in Hollywood with the intention of acquiring a stake in Legendary Pictures, raising concerns about China's control over the U.S. media industry.

In this way, Wang Jianlin's development plans in Hollywood had to be temporarily suspended.

Jack Ma successfully joins hands with Spielberg; Alibaba Pictures and Amblin Partners form strategic partnership

On October 9, Alibaba Pictures Group Co., Ltd. announced a collaborative development plan based on comprehensive strategic cooperation in the future with Amblin Partners (formerly DreamWorks), one of the six major Hollywood film studios and a subsidiary of Universal Pictures.

According to the agreement between the two parties, Alibaba will acquire part of Amblin Partners' equity and become one of Amblin Partners' strategic shareholders. The two parties will carry out close cooperation in various fields. Alibaba Pictures will also send a representative to join Amblin Partners' board of directors to participate in the decision-making of major company matters.

This cooperation is the first time that Amblin Partners has accepted Chinese capital, and it is also the first time that Alibaba Pictures has reached a cooperation with a first-class Hollywood entertainment group in the form of a combination of capital and business.

Amblin Partners will leverage Alibaba Pictures' vast network and user base to better integrate into the Chinese film market, while Alibaba Pictures' deeper access to the world's leading Hollywood film system will undoubtedly be an intangible asset for China's dead-end film industry.

It is worth mentioning that the chairman of Amblin Partners is the world's most influential director, Steve Spielberg, who has directed films such as "Jaws" and "ET the Extra-Terrestrial", and holds the record of the highest-grossing director in the world. Spielberg said that he is proud and excited to work with Alibaba Pictures, and hopes to create new growth points through this cooperation to promote the further development of the company.

Alibaba Pictures' global ambitions highlighted as strategic focus shifts toward international business

Since 2015, Alibaba Pictures has successively invested in Hollywood blockbusters such as "Mission: Impossible 5: Rogue Nation", "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows", "Star Trek Beyond" and the Korean film "REAL". Alibaba Pictures also co-invested with Skydance in the World War II film "Flying Tigers".

After more than two years of operation, Alibaba Pictures' international business has achieved remarkable results and won unanimous recognition from many partners including Hollywood.

The international business, led by President Zhang Wei, is booming. Currently, there are business teams in the United States, the United Kingdom, South Korea and other countries to promote the business, and a business model with investment, co-production and Internet distribution as its core competitiveness has been formed.

This strategic cooperation with the Hollywood company has further accelerated Alibaba Pictures' large-scale global resource integration, allowing China to gain a firm foothold in the tide of economic globalization, alleviating the increasingly serious economic growth pressure at home, ending the history of low quality in the domestic entertainment industry, and breaking the current situation of China's passive acceptance of foreign culture and values.
