GM may be the first company to test self-driving cars in New York

The rapid iteration of intelligent technology has brought new opportunities for driverless cars. Whether it is Internet giants such as Baidu and Google, or automobile manufacturers such as Tesla, BMW, and Volkswagen, they are all aiming at driverless cars, the next stage of automobile development.

At present, many companies have already pushed their driverless cars to the stage of road testing, but most of them choose areas with good road conditions for testing, and cannot yet be carried out in some metropolitan areas with complex road conditions. Therefore, there are some limitations in data acquisition.

Now, a traditional automaker is going to bring its driverless cars to international cities to establish itself as the "big brother" in this field. It is reported that General Motors is planning to become the first company to test driverless cars in New York City, and it may take an important step towards the commercialization of driverless technology.

Cruise Automation, a self-driving car company owned by General Motors, will deploy a fleet of Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicles in New York City early next year for testing within a five-square-mile area of lower Manhattan, said Keller Vogt, CEO of the company.

It is reported that in order to ensure the effective collection of data and respond to emergencies, GM will also provide a safety officer to assist in the driving position of each test vehicle.

This is not the first time Cruise has conducted road tests in a metropolitan area. Previously, they have conducted road tests with more than 100 Bolt driverless cars in multiple locations, including the traffic-congested San Francisco.

GM said that the test in San Francisco is the most valuable because it can provide a complex learning environment for self-driving cars and collect more valuable data. The same effect will be achieved in the road test in New York, where the weather is worse and drivers are more aggressive, which will accelerate the progress of self-driving technology.

At the same time, there are reports that Cuirse will open a research center in New York City to ensure that its projects are carried out in New York.
