Survey shows that most developers have never built a mobile app

Although there are more and more mobile phones in the world, Telerik's survey on the status of mobile developers found that more than half of the developers have never built a mobile application.

Telerik interviewed 3,000 IT professionals about mobile development-related issues in this mobile developer status survey. Among these people, a large number have never been exposed to mobile development and have never built a mobile application (57%); another part of the population only builds a functional application in about a year (47%).

16% of developers face some limitations when approaching mobile development or are affected by the constant changes in development practices and technologies; another 16% are affected by lack of time (19%) and lack of tools (15%).

The top reasons for building a mobile app are to improve operational efficiency and create a new revenue opportunity (39%); increase employee productivity (38%), enhance customer service (35%) and create a more meaningful way for users to interact with the app (34%).

User experience is the most important consideration when building these applications. 44% of developers think user experience is the most important, while the other 24% think maintenance is the most important, 15% think performance is the most important, and 11% think security is the most important.

“The most noteworthy finding from this survey is that 57% of developers have never built a mobile app, which shows that mobile development is still highly specialized,” said Karen Tegan Padir, head of application development and deployment. “It also shows that the developer community as a whole needs some easy-to-use tools and simple development processes to make mobile development easier and more efficient.”
