Android 7.0 Nougat's five biggest flaws: no support for floating windows

Introduction: Currently, Android 7.0 Nougat has been slowly deployed to Android devices around the world. As usual, Nexus devices are still the first to get Google's mobile operating system, and other smartphones will have to wait for some time.

Android 7.0 Nougat includes some cool new features, such as split-screen multitasking, bundled notifications, and the Daydream VR platform. However, as the saying goes, "No one is perfect", and this also applies to products. Today, foreign media pointed out that Android 7.0 Nougat still has five areas that need improvement, as follows:

Restart Options

In Android 7.0 Nougat, Google did not introduce native support for the "restart" option. In other words, in Nexus devices running the pure version of the Android operating system, there is no restart option. In devices such as Nexus 6P or Nexus 5X, if you want to restart the device, you can only choose to long press the power button, wait for the shutdown to complete, and then press the power button again to turn on the device.

In comparison, most smartphone manufacturers have introduced a restart option in their customized version of Android systems. When users press and hold the power button, two intuitive options will appear: shut down or restart.

The editor believes that if Google can make Android 7.0 natively support the "restart" option, it will definitely make the system more user-friendly.

Night Mode

Perhaps the most embarrassing omission by Google is the lack of a "night mode" option in Android 7.0. Previously, Google introduced a "night mode" option in the developer previews of Android M and N, but the feature did not appear in the final version. Android's interface is mostly white, which makes many users feel very uncomfortable with their eyes when using it in a dark room. Although lowering the screen brightness can bring some help, a system-level night mode is really necessary for many users.

Previously, the developer preview of Android N had a "night mode" that was similar to the Twilight app, which can filter out the blue spectrum on the phone screen to solve the problem of playing with the phone before going to bed affecting sleep quality. Studies have shown that if you are exposed to blue light before going to bed, it will have a negative impact on your sleep pattern.

Better application backup management

Android Marshmallow added support for app data backup, but this feature has not been improved in Nougat. When you install an app, Google will restore the saved data from it. However, the app will only be backed up once when the phone is charged (a day or two), and the backup time selection is not rich. At the same time, the backup options are relatively few.

Floating window

Android 7.0 Nougat supports split-screen mode, and Google is starting to move in the right direction, but maybe it can do better. Android 7.0 added multi-window functionality, but it was limited to a split-screen view of two apps. For smaller phones, this feature is enough. However, in tablets and larger phones, we hope that Google will introduce a true floating window option to Android. Currently, Samsung has introduced this feature in Galaxy devices, but app support is lacking.

Android 7.0 includes a feature called "freeform window," but it's limited to Android TV, which lets you play a video in a small window while you do other things.

Easier app uninstallation

Google has made it easier to install and update Android apps by improving the Play Store on Android and the web, but in Android 7.0, completely uninstalling apps still takes some effort, requiring users to find apps from the system settings, app drawer, or Play Store and then uninstall them.

At the same time, the native Android system only supports uninstalling one app at a time. Therefore, Google needs to make some improvements in the convenience of uninstalling apps.

summary

In fact, Android 7.0 "Nougat" is already very good, it contains a lot of new features and improvements, and the defects we mentioned here are a bit picky. However, if Google can make improvements in the above five aspects, I believe Android 7.0 will become more attractive.
