Mercedes wireless charging system coming in 2018
On July 20, Mercedes-Benz plans to launch its first wireless charging system for electric vehicles in 2018, aiming to relieve owners of plug-in electric vehicles from the pain of wired charging. This wireless charging technology will require hardware replacement of the vehicle. The system relies on inductive charging, which is similar to the technology that wireless charging pads can use for wireless charging of smartphones, but involves higher power levels. The inductive charging pad is placed on the floor of the garage or driveway, which transfers power to the receiver plate mounted on the underside of the vehicle. When the vehicle enters the range of the charging pad, an indicator light on the car's display will guide the user into the best position for the most efficient charging. At the launch of the 2018 Mercedes S-Class, Mercedes-Benz officials said that the new technology is still in a relatively early stage, and even on the S-Class hybrid, this technology is an optional configuration rather than a standard configuration. In addition, Mercedes' fastest charger currently supports up to 11 kilowatts, while the wireless charging system is limited to 3.6 kilowatts. This means it takes longer to complete the charge.
