iPhone 8's four most important features revealed, outperforming Samsung Galaxy S8

With its all-in-one curved screen and powerful octa-core chip, the Samsung Galaxy S8 has become the new benchmark in the mobile phone industry, but Apple seems to be taking up the challenge. Rumor has it that Apple will adopt a borderless design for the 10th anniversary iPhone released this fall, with many of the same features as the S8. So the question is, can Apple do better?

1. True borderless screen

The S8 has a screen-to-body ratio of 83%, so it is unlikely that Apple will make the new iPhone screen-to-body ratio even higher. There are rumors that Apple will use a curved OLED screen for the iPhone 8. So while it is possible that the front of the phone is 100% covered by the screen, it is unlikely given that the iPhone 8 screen is rumored to be made by Samsung. Just imagine, how could Samsung supply its best screen to its competitors first?

2. Embedded fingerprint sensor

Even with a similar screen, Apple could have outdone the S8 by embedding the Touch ID sensor and the Home button in the screen. Apple was awarded a patent in 2015 that would have embedded the fingerprint sensor under the screen using ultrasonic imaging technology. The 3D Touch technology on the new iPhone allows users to operate the phone interface without using physical buttons, which means the iPhone 8 can have no Home button. The S8 also has no Home button, but the fingerprint sensor is on the back of the phone, very close to the camera.

3. Depth-sensing camera

The S8 has other ways to unlock your phone, using an iris scanner and facial recognition, but even Samsung admits that the latter isn't the most secure. Apple could make facial recognition more secure by adding a depth-sensing camera to the iPhone 8. In addition to imaging the outline of a face, a depth-sensing camera could also be used to map the surrounding environment, adding augmented reality features to the iPhone.

4. Better batteries

Batteries have always been Apple's weak spot, but this year the iPhone's battery may be better than the S8's. Although the S8's battery has not yet been officially tested, we know that Samsung is playing it safe this year. The S8 series battery is the same size as the S7, but it needs to power a larger screen.

Even if the iPhone doesn't beat the S8 in terms of battery life, it could have a better way to charge. Apple has been granted a patent for close-range wireless charging technology, which would allow users to charge their iPhones on a dedicated desk, computer, or other Apple devices. Even if it can't do any of the above four things, Apple could at least restore the traditional headphone jack and keep the iPhone price lower than the S8.
