Introduction to key new features of iOS 14, the list of supported devices may be the same as iOS 13

iOS14 Apple's next-generation iOS operating system is expected to be released in June, more precisely iOS14 and iPadOS14, which are Apple's next-generation operating systems for iPhone and iPad, and are expected to debut at WWDC in June. iOS updates often include hundreds of adjustments and new features, and although there are hidden features that we don't know about, some of the key features have been announced.

Home Screen

On the Apple Watch, Apple allows all installed apps to be viewed in a list, and the iPhone may have a similar feature in iOS 14. The list should be alphabetical, allowing users to see all the apps installed on the iPhone, and users will reportedly be able to set filters to view app categories, such as recently used apps or apps with unread notifications.

Fitness Apps

Apple is developing a fitness app for iPhone, Apple Watch, and Apple TV that will allow users to download fitness-related videos that will guide them through various workouts. The Apple Watch will be used to track progress through the workout routines, which will be displayed on the iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV. There will be a variety of different workout types, including indoor running, cycling, rowing, stretching, core training, strength training, outdoor walking, dance, and yoga.

New features in messaging

Apple is testing a bunch of new features for iMessage, and the new functionality may be included in the iOS 14 update.

Allow users to tag contacts with their names (e.g. @eric) when messaging.

Apple is also working on a feature that would allow the user to revoke an iMessage after it has been sent, with the revocation visible to both parties.

Why do I seem to have seen these two functions before? They must have been available on WeChat and QQ for a long time.

New Augmented Reality (AR) Applications

Apple seems to be planning to introduce a new augmented reality application, codenamed Gobi, in iOS 14. The application is said to allow users to "get more information about the world around them" through AR. The development of augmented reality technology will have a wide range of applications in many fields.

Set third-party apps as default

Starting with iOS 14, Apple may allow iPhone and iPad users to set third-party mail, browser, and music apps as defaults instead of Apple's own apps.

This change will allow apps such as Google Chrome and Gmail to be set as default apps on iOS devices. Originally, Safari was the default app for opening web pages, but now it can be changed to Google Chrome or UC Browser.

Mouse and trackpad support

Apple added accessibility features in iOS 13, including support for external mice, and in iOS 14, this functionality will be greatly expanded. In particular, using a trackpad or mouse on an iPad will be similar to the experience on a Mac computer. Apple is accelerating the pace of making the iPad a productivity tool.

Apple plans to provide a number of gestures and features for the mouse cursor:

  • Adaptive cursors When using a trackpad or mouse on an iOS device, the cursor will disappear after a few seconds of inactivity, unlike the cursor on a Mac which is always visible. It will reappear once you activate the trackpad or mouse again.
  • Multiple pointers On a Mac, you'll see multiple pointers, depending on what you're doing. The standard arrow pointer is visible most of the time, but it switches to a hand when you're over a link.
  • Right-click will support gestures, such as tapping the right mouse button with two fingers.
  • Switching apps There will be a gesture that activates the Launchpad, allowing you to switch between apps.

Device Compatibility

Rumor has it that iOS 14 will have the same device compatibility list as iOS 13, including older devices like the iPhone SE and iPhone 6s. It is not clear whether the rumor is accurate. If the news is accurate, then those who are still using the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus are in luck. Except for some lags when playing large games and poor image quality when taking photos at night, the iPhone 6S currently performs very smoothly under iOS 13. It is as smooth as the current mainstream Android phones when reading WeChat, browsing Weibo, and shopping on Taobao. If iOS 14 can still support it, this 2015 phone can still last for another year.
