Sony PS VR experience: comfortable to wear, but the controller is terrible

Although this is not the first time we have seen a review of PlayStation VR, now that Sony has disclosed its price and various details, it means that the device has been finalized and we can experience it again.

Sony is very clear about the positioning of PlayStation VR, which is cheap. Therefore, it chose a low price for this VR headset, and also equipped it with a dedicated processing unit to help players get a smoother experience. In addition, this year's first lineup has finally been announced, and its performance is worth another look. While the GDC Game Developers Conference is in progress, let's take a look at the feeling after experiencing PlayStation VR for four hours in a row:

After spending four hours with the PlayStation VR, playing a variety of launch titles, we can say it's found its place. The headset's ergonomics are great, and it's easy to put on, take off, and adjust. Even with glasses, you can find the best fit without it feeling too tight.

Although the performance of PS4 is certainly far behind that of PC, this does not make PlayStation VR completely incomparable to Oculus Rfit. Sony and developers have put a lot of effort into the art to ensure that the game can be as pleasing to the eye as possible within the hardware limitations.

The biggest problem may be with Sony's PlayStation Move controller. The design of the PlayStation Move is, to put it bluntly, from the same era as the Wii, and is far from today's standards. If Sony sticks with this design, it would be a huge mistake, and I just hope it gets better before the device is officially released.

 

A demo called "Golem" on PlayStation VR is very interesting. It tells the story of a little girl who can't walk with her legs. She can use telepathy to control a small doll and a huge golem. When you become a golem, using the handle to fight becomes the main gameplay. You need to use your hands to attack or defend.

However, there is a problem: the PlayStation MOVE is a bit slow to respond, the tracking positioning is inaccurate, and the worst thing is that it is not sensitive to speed changes, so a quick heavy blow may turn into slow motion.

Another example is Job Simulator. You can experience this demo on Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, but the experience is terrible on PlayStation VR. Because of the relative slowness of PlayStation MOVE, grabbing things becomes an annoying thing.

 

In addition, the PlayStation MOVE has design problems. The handles of Oculus Rift and HTC Vive make you feel that you really have hands in the virtual world, but the PlayStation MOVE is too big and too thick, and your most intuitive feeling is that you are always holding two sticks, which greatly reduces the sense of immersion.

The two best games offered by PlayStation VR at the event were Rez Infinity and EVE: Valkyrie. Ironically, they were rated best in part because they don't rely on the PlayStation Move, but instead use traditional PS4 controllers.

We don't expect Sony to completely change the design of PlayStation MOVE in the next six or seven months, but we just hope that the performance can be better.

There is no doubt that PlayStation VR is an excellent VR headset. It is specially designed for the PS4 platform, so we don't need to worry about computer configuration. Just buy a PS4 and PlayStation VR to start the virtual reality journey. Sony has made it clear that the biggest advantage of PlayStation VR is its low threshold, and it has a very clear positioning for its own products.

However, the poor quality of PlayStation MOVE has greatly reduced the experience of PlayStation VR. Perhaps due to cost-cutting considerations, the handle is relatively backward in design and does not have any cutting-edge technology. The purpose of this new controller is to replace our hands, and if it cannot be accurate, it is meaningless.
