Why are asthma attacks so deadly? First aid experts explain

Recently, a nurse and an elderly man in Shanghai died of asthma attacks, which attracted the attention of netizens. In China, asthma affects the lives of more than 40 million adults, and asthma is becoming more common.

So, what exactly is asthma? Why is an asthma attack so fatal? Jia Dacheng, a senior emergency expert at the Beijing Emergency Center, explains it to you.

What is asthma?

Bronchial asthma, referred to as asthma, is a chronic respiratory disease. The pathogenesis of asthma is very complex and is mainly caused by allergies.

Common allergens include pollen, dust mites, fungi, animal fur, food (such as fish, shrimp, crab, milk, eggs) and some medicines. Avoiding contact with allergens is an important measure to prevent asthma attacks.

Why are asthma attacks so deadly?

Severe asthma may be life-threatening in just a few minutes or even a few minutes. This is due to severe bronchial spasm leading to severe airway narrowing. The trachea suddenly becomes narrower, which can cause hypoxemia and hypercapnia. The patient cannot breathe in oxygen or exhale carbon dioxide, which will lead to a series of serious consequences such as low blood pressure, loss of consciousness, respiratory and cardiac arrest.

What should I do if I have an asthma attack?

First of all, you should avoid allergens.

People with a history of asthma should carry a salbutamol aerosol with them and inhale it immediately when an asthma attack occurs. If oxygen is available, it should also be inhaled immediately.

In addition, remember to call the emergency number and seek medical treatment immediately.
