According to the Shanghai Municipal Market Supervision Bureau on the evening of April 6, the yeast content of a batch of "one hour after meal" Bifidobacterium CI flavored fermented milk produced by Custard Yogurt (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. exceeded the standard.

The notice shows that the "one hour after meal" Bifidobacterium CI flavored fermented milk (250g/bottle, 2021-12-23) produced by Kashi Yogurt (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. and sold by Uni-President Enterprises (Shanghai) Convenience Store Yongxinfang Store has a yeast detection value of 6000 CFU/g, which is 60 times the minimum value specified in the standard (≤100 CFU/g).

The Shanghai Municipal Administration for Market Regulation explained that yeast is a single-celled fungus that can ferment sugar into alcohol and carbon dioxide. It is a common fungus in nature and a natural fermentation agent. The yeast count is an indicative indicator for evaluating the hygienic quality of food. The main reason for its exceeding the standard may be contamination of processing raw materials or improper control of product storage and transportation conditions. The Shanghai Municipal Administration for Market Regulation has asked the relevant district market supervision bureaus to promptly investigate and deal with unqualified foods and their producers and operators, and record the relevant circumstances in the food safety credit files of food producers and operators.

Kashi Dairy responded to reporters on April 7 that the excessive yeast content may be due to storage and transportation or terminal temperature not meeting the standard after leaving the factory. Kashi samples of this batch of products were tested by a third party and were found to be in compliance with national standards.

According to the official website of Kashi Yogurt, Kashi Dairy was registered in China in 1999 and is a modern professional biological dairy company integrating R&D, production, sales and cold chain logistics. It currently has three production bases: Tantou Branch, Baoan Branch and Suzhou Branch of Kashi Dairy (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd.

How to choose yogurt?

If the yogurt you buy has the word "flavored" in its name, such as "flavored fermented milk", "yogurt", "lactic acid bacteria beverage", etc., it is often not real yogurt.

"Flavor" often does not refer to taste, but to other ingredients added by merchants to improve the taste and nutrition of yogurt, such as fruit grains, grains, nutritional enhancers, additives, etc. Of course, the most commonly added ingredient is sugar.

The protein content of flavored fermented milk is generally lower than that of plain yogurt, and the sugar and fat content is higher than that of yogurt.

In general, in terms of nutritional value:

Yogurt/fermented milk>Flavored yogurt>Lactic acid bacteria beverage

How to tell if what you buy is yogurt?

If the product name is "fermented milk", "yogurt", "sour milk", "yogurt", etc., it generally refers to yogurt.

If you are unsure about the name, you can look at the "product category" again. If the product category is "fermented milk", it is yogurt. If it says "flavored fermented milk" or "lactic acid bacteria beverage", then you have to choose carefully!
