BlackBerry Leap: A low-end smartphone with a full touch screen

After the hype, how many BlackBerry loyalists are there?

At the MWC2015 conference, the company launched the low-end BlackBerry system full-touch screen phone Leap, which uses a full touch design similar to the previous Z10, but with a lower positioning, the screen is only 5 inches and the resolution is 720p.

In terms of other hardware, it is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8960 processor with a main frequency of 1.5GHz, built-in 2GB system memory and 16GB body storage, supports maximum 128GB of expanded storage, 2-megapixel front and 8-megapixel rear cameras, and a battery capacity of 2800 mAh. It is non-removable and has a battery life of approximately 25 hours.

The phone is 9.4mm thick, but because of the textured design on the back, it feels thick. The plastic back doesn't look as good as metal, but it feels good in the hand, which is an advantage.

BlackBerry Leap has abandoned the BlackBerry signature LOGO and the classic physical QWERTY keyboard. This change is also to cater to people's current mobile phone usage habits and the current mobile phone development trend.

However, BlackBerry wants to cater to the trend of full touch screen design, and its Passport is a flagship product that emphasizes the input feel of a physical keyboard, which shows that the manufacturer is still reluctant to say goodbye to its past. The operating experience of different products is a bit split, which is tangled.

Like Z10, the biggest change of Leap is that the keyboard virtual keyboard supports multiple languages, and the built-in input method will correct your typos. For non-BlackBerry fans, typing on the virtual keyboard may mean a "more modern" way, and the screen can have more space. Although it is only a 720P screen, considering its positioning, it is not appropriate to compare it with flagships such as iPhone 6.

In terms of hardware, BlackBerry Leap is indeed a mid-range model, and its market positioning is young, motivated professionals. I believe that many people are still interested in BlackBerry phones.

The price of the BlackBerry Leap is 199 pounds in foreign countries, which is about 1,845 yuan before tax. If you have a two-year contract, you can get the phone for free with a monthly fee of 22 pounds (about 204 yuan). However, there is no news about its launch in mainland China, and we are not sure whether it will be launched in China.
