"Commonly used ceramic bowls are made of fired clay and then covered with a layer of glaze. After being fired through a special process, qualified ceramic bowls are harmless to the human body. However , some unqualified ceramic bowls on the market have high levels of heavy metals due to factors such as insufficient baking temperature or improper processing. They are indeed 'toxic bowls.' "

What kind of ceramic bowls might contain toxins?

Director Jin said that currently, there are three main types of patterned ceramic tableware on the market: overglaze, inglaze and underglaze. "Among them, overglaze is brightly colored, and the pigments usually contain heavy metals such as lead and cadmium. In addition, overglaze is fired at a relatively low temperature, which may cause the pigments to not be completely fixed, and it is easy to wear and fade. The painted patterns are on the outermost layer, which is in direct contact with food. Using it to hold hot and acidic food will increase the precipitation of heavy metals."

Overglaze color: The body is fired at high temperature to become white porcelain, then patterns are drawn on the glaze layer, and finally it is fired a second time at a low temperature of 600~900℃.

Color in glaze: A layer of transparent glaze base will be applied on the body and then fired at 800℃. After the pattern is drawn, a second glaze will be applied to cover and protect the pattern. Finally, it will be fired at a high temperature of 1200℃~1300℃ to fuse the glaze layer and firmly fix the pattern.

Underglaze color: the pattern is first drawn on the body and then the glaze layer is applied, and then it is fired at a high temperature of more than 1200℃.

Director Jin also provided several methods to roughly judge the production process of ceramic tableware:

1. Look at the color: Place the tableware under a light source to see whether the refracted light is consistent between the patterned and unpatterned parts. If it has a glassy texture, it is in-glaze/underglaze color; otherwise, it is overglaze color.

2. Texture: The inner wall of the in-glaze/underglaze color is smooth and feels smooth without any roughness, and there is no obvious boundary at the edge of the pattern; the overglaze color feels relatively rough, like the texture of a sticker.

3. Scrape the glaze: The glaze of underglaze color is very hard, while the inferior overglaze color may scrape off part of the pattern with a single scratch.

"From a safety perspective, pure white ceramics have the highest safety level , followed by underglaze colors, then in-glaze colors, and the lowest is overglaze colors. Alternatively, you can choose ceramic tableware with patterns on the outside and pure white inside. When choosing ceramic bowls, it is recommended to choose products from regular manufacturers, and purchase pure white porcelain, underglaze or in-glaze color tableware with strict control over raw materials and production processes.
