OpenSignal: 4G penetration in Singapore is close to 90%

OpenSignal analyzed the penetration of 4G in Singapore. In the past 12 months, Singapore's three operators, M1, Singtel and StarHub, have all seen an upward trend, but the biggest improvement has been in the user experience on StarHub's network. From the beginning of June 2018 to the beginning of November 2018, the operator increased its 4G penetration rate from 82.6% to 87.1%, an increase of more than 4%. M1's 4G penetration rate increased by 1.6%, while Singtel, the leader in this indicator, managed to reach the 90% milestone after improving by 1.1%.

Looking ahead to the next six months, from early November 2018 to early May 2019, the upward trend began to flatten. Singtel maintained its global lead by increasing its 4G availability to 91.2%.

StarHub saw the biggest increase, with its users able to access a 4G connection 89.2 per cent of the time, an increase of two percentage points over the six-month period and almost double the growth rate measured on Singtel.

The growth in the 4G availability metric is a strong indicator of the strategic investments being made by Singapore’s operators to strengthen their existing 4G infrastructure as they move towards 5G.

In the second quarter of 2018, StarHub upgraded its mobile network to offer 1Gbps 4G speeds and expanded its Gigabit network to Marina Bay, the Central Business District, as well as major shopping areas, transport hubs and town centres. Shortly afterwards, it completed its first 5G outdoor trial on the 3.5 GHz band.
