Faced with these combinations, which one is better? Can I get a booster shot during the positive period? Yuan Xiaodong, deputy chief physician of the Department of Infectious Diseases at Beijing Century Altar Hospital affiliated to Capital Medical University, gave us some answers.

Q: Is there any difference in the effectiveness of these combinations?

A: All vaccines approved for conditional marketing or emergency use in China are safe and effective. Beijing has provided a targeted vaccination strategy, and citizens do not need to worry too much about what combination or vaccine to get. According to real-world research and clinical trial data at home and abroad, combined with the actual vaccination in China, the interval between the second dose of booster immunization and the first dose of booster immunization is more than 6 months. Vaccination is not recommended during the positive period. At present, there is no need to get vaccinated within half a year after the positive test.

Q: Is the booster shot for Omicron?

A: Many studies at home and abroad have shown that vaccination can improve the protection against the Omicron variant. After two doses of inactivated vaccine basic immunization, the humoral immunity and cellular immune response levels are low, and after completing the booster immunization, it can induce extensive and effective humoral immunity, T cell and B cell immunity, that is, booster immunization can improve the body's immune response level. Vaccination can improve the protection against the Omicron variant. According to domestic and foreign data, especially after the booster shot, it has a good preventive effect on severe illness and death.

Q: Which groups of people are not suitable for booster shots?

A: This question can be understood as a contraindication to vaccination. Contraindications to the COVID-19 vaccine include: severe allergic reactions during previous vaccinations, such as anaphylactic shock and laryngeal edema; postponing vaccination for acute infectious diseases in the fever stage; postponing vaccination for severe chronic diseases in the acute attack stage, such as cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, patients with hypertensive crisis, myocardial infarction in patients with coronary heart disease, progressive autoimmune nervous system diseases, and epilepsy patients in the attack stage; and life has entered the terminal stage due to severe chronic diseases.

Q: Why do older people need booster shots?

A: The entire population is susceptible to the novel coronavirus, and the elderly are the most vulnerable group. The risk of developing severe illness and death after infection is significantly higher than that of young people. In addition, the proportion of elderly people with underlying diseases such as hypertension and diabetes is relatively high, which further increases the risk of severe illness and death after infection. Survey data in my country show that 75%-95% of the people who died after being infected with the novel coronavirus were not vaccinated. Vaccination, especially booster shots, has a protective effect of more than 90% against severe illness and death.

Q: What should I pay attention to when getting a booster shot?

A: First, wear loose clothes before vaccination to expose your upper arms for vaccination; second, do not conceal your medical history during vaccination, and let professionals make a comprehensive and accurate judgment on whether you are suitable for vaccination; third, do not get vaccinated when you are unwell.
