What is the most mysterious place on the Earth's surface? We call this place "Point Nemo", which is the farthest place from human beings on the Earth's surface. What does "farthest from humans" mean? Humans are terrestrial creatures, and their main activity area is land. With the help of modern technology, humans can be said to have traveled to every corner of the land. Of course, the ocean is not a forbidden area for humans. Humans drive ships between islands, and as long as humans want, they can sail ships to any place in the ocean. However, ships always have to depart from land, so the farther away from the land, the more difficult it is to reach. Point Nemo is the farthest place from the land in the ocean, so it is also called the "inaccessible pole of the ocean." In the 1990s, oceanographer Hervoye successfully marked the longitude and latitude of Point Nemo using the three-point equidistance method, and Point Nemo has been known to the world since then. How far is the nearest land in the ocean from Point Nemo? There are three islands closest to Point Nemo, namely Ducie Island, Motunui Island and Maher Island. Interestingly, they are all 2,688 kilometers away from Point Nemo. In other words, a circular area with Point Nemo as the center and a radius of 2,688 kilometers is a pure ocean area, which is more than twice the area of Europe. We advocate harmonious coexistence between humans and animals, but it is undeniable that human activities do occupy the living space of animals. This situation is particularly obvious on land, and marine life has not been spared. Human activities have also had an impact on the survival of marine life. However, Point Nemo is definitely a pure land, or "pure water". It is the place farthest away from humans, and few people go to this area. So, this must be an animal paradise, right? The marine life here must be extremely prosperous, right? The actual situation is not so. Instead of being a paradise for marine life, this place can be called a "life forbidden zone in the ocean". In 1997, a loud noise was heard near Point Nemo, which quickly attracted the attention of scientists who were monitoring the area. Because even the largest blue whale on earth could not make such a loud noise, scientists suspected that there might be some mysterious giant marine life hidden in this mysterious sea area, so a field investigation of Point Nemo began. After arriving at Point Nemo, scientists quickly discovered that not only was it far away from humans, but the water was also very good, but strangely, the creatures here were not prosperous. The number of marine life in the waters near Point Nemo is very small, the types are even smaller, and there is an extreme lack of diversity. After further testing, it was found that even the number of microorganisms in the seawater is much lower than in other seas. What is going on? It turns out that Point Nemo is not only far away from the land, but also avoids the South Pacific ocean circulation, so the fluidity of the seawater is very poor. The direct result of poor fluidity is insufficient nutrients in the seawater. With insufficient nutrients, microorganisms will naturally be scarce. With fewer microorganisms, there will naturally be fewer marine life that feed on microorganisms, and it will be even more difficult for organisms at higher levels in the food chain to obtain enough food, so this place has become a place where life is rare. Therefore, it is impossible for giant marine creatures to be bred in a life-desolate place like Point Nemo, and the previous speculation was completely overturned. This is like why there are fewer and fewer large wild animals on land? It is easy to release a tiger into the forest, but a tiger eats about 60 cattle and sheep a year. If there are only 60 cattle and sheep in the area, they will be gone next year after eating them this year. Therefore, at least a population of about 500 ungulates is needed to support this tiger. How much vegetation is needed to support such a large population of ungulates? Therefore, it is impossible to raise large animals in areas that are not extremely rich in resources. Therefore, the loud noise at Point Nemo is definitely not caused by large creatures. The loud noise at Point Nemo is actually more likely the result of plate movement. Because it is located in the fault area between two continental plates, relatively violent crustal movements occur from time to time, so it is not surprising that loud noises occur. Sure enough, in 2008, 21 years after the loud noise was heard at Point Nemo in 1997, the loud noise occurred again. This time, scientists are more convinced that the noise is related to crustal movement. Of course, all this has not been fully proven. After all, Point Nemo is too far away from humans, so human research on Point Nemo is still very limited. Interestingly, although Point Nemo is the farthest place from humans on the surface of the earth, it is the closest place to human cutting-edge technology. Humans are attracted by the closed ecological environment here, so they choose to land scrapped spacecraft here. To date, there are about 300 spacecraft buried here in the world, so this place is also called the "World Spacecraft Cemetery." For more information, please follow the official account: sunmonarch |
