On January 31, a carbon monoxide poisoning incident caused by a gas water heater occurred in Taiyang Village, Liunan District, Liuzhou City, Guangxi, resulting in three deaths and one injury.

On February 4, a gas leak occurred in a resident's home in Nanyang City, Henan Province, killing three people .

On March 13, a gas explosion occurred in Yanjiao Town, Sanhe City, Langfang, Hebei Province, killing 7 people and injuring 27 .

The “prime culprit” of gas accidents

The "National Gas Accident Analysis Report (2024 First Half Report)" pointed out that among the 181 gas accidents, in terms of accident types, there were 96 residential user accidents , 20 industrial and commercial user accidents (including 17 catering user accidents), 64 pipeline network accidents, and 1 plant and station accident.

In terms of the causes of accidents, there were 23 accidents caused by hose problems (hose falling off, aging and damage, and animal bites) among gas users in the first half of the year, a significant increase from 13 in the first half of 2023. Among them, 4 were caused by natural gas and 19 by liquefied petroleum gas, which were the main causes of user accidents .

It is worth noting that accidents involving carbon monoxide poisoning from gas water heaters are still frequent . In the first half of 2024, there were 13 gas water heater carbon monoxide poisoning accidents (including 2 natural gas and 11 liquefied petroleum gas), resulting in 8 deaths and 28 injuries . Compared with the first half of 2023, the number of accidents increased by 10, the number of deaths increased by 3, and the number of injuries increased by 17.

How to choose and use the gas hose correctly?

The gas appliance hose is the channel connecting the indoor gas pipeline and the stove, and is directly related to gas safety.

1. Metal connecting hoses that meet the current national standards should be used as much as possible. Compared with rubber composite hoses, metal-coated hoses and metal bellows are more resistant to high temperatures, corrosion, and rat bites .

2. Ensure that the connection between the fuel appliance hose and the gas equipment pipeline is firm, and regularly check the connection for leaks . If a leak is found, stop using it immediately.

3. The hose of the gas appliance should be replaced regularly .

3 steps to master the rules of gas leak response

According to regulations, gas companies must add odorants such as mercaptans or tetrahydrothiophene to natural gas, which will produce a special, unpleasant, warning odor . If this odor persists, be alert to whether there is a gas leak.

1. Close the valve immediately : Immediately close the main valve in front of the indoor meter, open doors and windows for ventilation and air distribution, and reduce the concentration of indoor gas.

2. Avoid electric sparks indoors : Keep all electrical switches in the same state. Do not use open flames, smoke, turn on or off electrical appliances, or strike iron objects. Because any operation of turning on or off electricity may cause electric sparks. For example, when a gas leak occurs, some users turn on the exhaust fan to exhaust the gas, which causes an explosion instead.

3. Dial the emergency number outdoors : Go to an open area outdoors to call the police to avoid generating electric sparks indoors when making the call.

Gas alarm

The last line of defense for safe gas use

The gas alarm is the last line of defense to ensure the safe use of gas. When the gas concentration in the space reaches the preset critical point, the gas alarm will sound an alarm. The gas alarm must be installed correctly to function effectively.

Choose the right gas alarm

You should purchase qualified products through regular channels , and also choose an alarm that matches the gas source you are using. If you are using natural gas, you should choose a natural gas alarm ; if you are using liquefied petroleum gas, you should choose a liquefied petroleum gas alarm .

Installation location is important

The gas alarm should be installed near the gas meter or the gas pipeline connection point. It is prohibited to install the gas alarm above the stove or in closed spaces such as cabinets.

The alarm should remain in working condition for a long time

After installing the gas alarm, it should be powered on for a long time to keep it in working condition. Perform a self-check on the gas alarm once a year by pressing the self-check button on the machine. If the alarm sounds after a few seconds, it proves that it is in normal working condition. Household gas alarms need to be scrapped and replaced after 5 years.
