Recently, AnTuTu revealed the running score of MediaTek's latest flagship chip helio X20, which has been brewing for a long time. Logically speaking, this more balanced setting will have lower power consumption for public architecture, compared with Huawei Kirin 950's structure of 4 A72 and 4 A53 cores. However, MediaTek X20 uses the backward TSMC 20nm process, which is quite different from HiSilicon's 16nm or Qualcomm and Samsung's 14nm. However, this time, MediaTek X20 is its first SoC with built-in support for CDMA2000 baseband, which is crucial for MediaTek to enter the US market and break Qualcomm's monopoly in this region. “Brothers in distress” among Taiwanese enterprises After talking about chip information, let’s talk about mobile phones. It is reported that the model of the X20 exposed on Antutu may be HTC's M10 (Chinese version). According to last year's sales information, HTC's special edition M9+ in China last year was equipped with MediaTek's flagship product Helio X10, but it was neither well received nor popular after it was launched, and its sales were dismal. Putting aside the brand of MediaTek, the performance of Helio X10 is also insufficient. Consumers would rather choose the hot Snapdragon 810 than MediaTek, which is inferior in performance and brand. We don’t know whether Helio x20 can reverse this situation, but as Taiwanese companies, HTC and others may very likely continue to bet on MediaTek this year and equip their flagship phones launched for the mainland with this chip. HTC and MediaTek can be described as "brothers in distress" among Taiwanese companies. Both brothers were once popular, but now they have become very down and out. HTC's chaotic product line and various functions that did not hit the pain points of users at the time led to market disapproval and its brand positioning continued to decline from the high-end. MediaTek, on the other hand, was in the low-end market at the time, and people even labeled MTK as being equivalent to the low-end. Now it is unable to transform and impact the mid-to-high-end market, and it has been defeated repeatedly every time it tries to make efforts in the mid-to-high-end market. Does MediaTek have a chance to reverse its current situation with this chip? A few days ago, the media reported that MediaTek Vice Chairman Xie Qingjiang said in a meeting that the reason why he put MTK's chips, which were originally used for mid-to-high-end phones, on 1,000 yuan phones was: "I only have two choices, one is to count the money with tears, the other is not to count the money with tears." The source of this sentence is that after Xiaomi purchased the Helio X10 SoC, it used it in its low-end product Redmi Note 2, causing the chip, which was originally positioned in the mid-to-high-end, to be forcibly pulled into the thousand-yuan machine market. So, will the helio x20 repeat the fate of the x10? It is believed that it is still difficult for MediaTek to get rid of the low-end market. To distribute mid-to-high-end products, it requires not only product strength but also brand influence. The low-end label has been deeply imprinted on MediaTek for many years, and it will take some effort to erase it. In addition, if we want to strive for the mid-to-high-end market, we can no longer compromise with the thousand-yuan phone market. In fact, a large part of the reason why MediaTek cannot get rid of the low-end market is also due to itself. Rather than saying that Xiaomi, LeTV and other "pig teammates" have pitted MediaTek, it is better to say that MediaTek is tearfully guiding itself to the low-end market in order to count money. If MediaTek is not determined to refuse to distribute its flagship products to thousand-yuan phones, then it will be difficult for MediaTek to establish its image in the future. It is reported that the processor model is MT6797. The phone equipped with this processor is equipped with 3GB memory, 32GB storage, 2K screen resolution, and a camera combination of 13 million front + 23 million rear pixels. Judging from the running scores released this time, the helio x20 scored 85600, which is still a little behind the most powerful chip in mass production, the HiSilicon Kirin 950 (except Apple). However, since the resolution of the test model is 2k, the graphics performance pressure is greater than the 1080p of MATE8, so in reality, the performance of the helio x20 is not much different from that of the 950. The release of Antutu data indicates that the X20 will be launched soon. According to the data we have previously obtained, MediaTek helio x20 has up to ten cores! What's the use of ten cores? The ten cores of Helio x20 are divided into three parts. They include four low-power 1.4GHz quad-core A53 processors for processing small applications and daily standby; four 2.0GHz quad-core A53 processors that balance performance and power consumption for processing daily applications; and two 2.5GHz dual-core A72 processors for sprinting extreme performance to handle large games and multitasking. In order to make such three-cluster processors run normally, MediaTek has also developed a customized interconnect IP, which MediaTek calls "MediaTek Coherent System Interconnect" (MCSI). In conclusion: MediaTek's products have played a big role in changing the low-end and mid-range market, especially the thousand-yuan phone market. It is precisely because of its low-priced and high-performance chips that we now have such cost-effective configurations in the thousand-yuan phones. In this regard, we really have to thank MediaTek. In addition, this year MediaTek integrated a CDMA module on its own chip. We all know that the previous helio x10 does not support the telecom frequency band. Users of telecom-standard mobile phones who want to buy a thousand-yuan phone should choose the Snapdragon 615 with low performance. If the X20 is distributed in the low-end and mid-range markets, it will interrupt Qualcomm's monopoly on the telecom standard in the low-end and mid-range markets. It is believed that if Helio X20 is put into the mid-to-high-end market, it will be difficult for MediaTek to gain a foothold in the market, facing the pressure from the upcoming Snapdragon 820, Samsung 8890 and the already launched HiSilicon Kirin 950. The accurate positioning of this chip should be in the mid-to-low-end market, and its direct competitor will be Qualcomm's Snapdragon 650. If this speculation is accurate, it will play a very important role in MediaTek's capture of the mid-to-low-end market and the improvement of the quality of low-end mobile phones.
