Toyota provides Tokyo with hydrogen fuel cell buses that can be used as generators in emergencies

Foreign media reports

Toyota recently said it would start selling hydrogen fuel cell buses in Tokyo next year, ahead of the 2020 Summer Olympics.

The news is not surprising, as hydrogen-powered buses have already appeared in many cities around the world. Toyota's buses have a special feature: when an emergency occurs, the bus can be turned into a high-performance external generator.

"In the future, the Toyota Group believes that hydrogen will become a powerful source of energy," Toyota said in a statement, adding that it already has sales of its zero-emission Mirai fuel cell sedan.

According to the data, Toyota's fuel cell bus is more powerful than Mirai. It can be equipped with up to 10 fuel tanks, which can store 600 liters of high-pressure H2 and generate 235 kWh of electricity, which is three times the battery of Tesla Model S. Because of its strong power, the bus can supply electricity to the outside.

In fact, there are already cars that can be used as generators, such as the GM Chevrolet Colorado ZH2, which is used by the US military and can also generate electricity. Toyota claims that the electricity provided by the hydrogen bus can light up an emergency evacuation site, such as a school gymnasium.
