Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi to share electric vehicle technology

Recently, foreign media reported that Nissan Motor and Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn said on Wednesday that Renault-Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors will unify all their electric and hybrid technologies.

In October this year, Nissan officially announced that it had successfully acquired 34% of Mitsubishi Motors' shares, becoming Mitsubishi's largest shareholder.

The acquisition will help strengthen the 17-year partnership between Renault and Nissan. With the addition of Mitsubishi Motors, the total car sales of the Renault-Nissan Alliance in 2016 will reach 10 million units, qualifying it to be among the world's top three automobile groups (last year, the top three global automakers were Toyota, Volkswagen and General Motors, with annual sales of 10.15 million, 9.93 million and 9.84 million respectively).

It is understood that after a shareholder vote on Wednesday this week, Carlos Ghosn, CEO of Nissan and Renault, successfully served as chairman of Mitsubishi's board of directors.

In an interview with Nikkei on the same day, Ghosn said the Renault-Nissan Alliance will benefit especially from Mitsubishi Motors' more advanced hybrid technology. The entire group will adopt this technology to avoid duplication of research and development. He said: "Obviously, with the addition of Mitsubishi Plus, Mitsubishi and the Alliance will use the same platform, the same technology, whether it is electric vehicles, autonomous vehicles or connected vehicles."

When asked about the Mitsubishi fuel economy data scandal, Ghosn said he was not aware of it, but "as the future chairman of Mitsubishi, my responsibility will be to ensure strict governance at Mitsubishi to prevent similar situations from happening again."

Based on the existing production capacity of these three companies, their electric vehicle scale is expected to become the largest in the world.
