Volkswagen to pay another $3 billion fine for emissions cheating

According to media reports on the 8th, Volkswagen and the U.S. Department of Justice are close to reaching a settlement agreement to settle the U.S. government's civil and criminal investigations related to its emissions cheating scandal. As a condition of the settlement, the U.S. Department of Justice may require Volkswagen to pay a fine of more than $3 billion.

The two sides could announce a deal as early as next week, and the final fine could change, the sources said. Volkswagen will also be required to appoint an external monitor and agree to other major reforms.

Last year, Volkswagen reached a settlement with US regulators, affected car owners and dealers over the emissions scandal, paying a total of $17.5 billion. In addition, Volkswagen was collectively sued by car owners in Germany last week. Since Volkswagen's emissions cheating violated EU regulations, these diesel car owners sought compensation for this. It is reported that the lawsuit is intended to set a precedent for future lawsuits. The US-based Hausfeld Law Firm cooperated with the litigation foundation and the website My-Right.de so that claimants can sign and participate in the lawsuit without bearing the cost risk.
