According to Nikkei Chinese website, on February 2, Dieter Zetsche, chairman of Daimler AG, revealed that he plans to invest a total of 10 billion euros in the field of pure electric vehicles by 2025. During this period, more than 10 models including pure electric vehicles (EVs) will be launched. The company plans to make pure electric vehicles account for up to 25% of new car sales by 2025, and will focus on investment in research and development and production equipment.

At a press conference on the same day, Dieter Zetsche said, "Considering the rapid development of battery technology, now is the time to speed up," indicating the idea of ​​increasing investment in electric vehicles such as pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHV). In addition, Daimler will invest 1 billion euros in the field of self-produced batteries. Including electric vehicles, the total investment will reach 11 billion euros, accounting for about 10% of the total investment.

Daimler plans to start electric car production at two factories in Germany, and related investment will increase accordingly. In addition, Dieter Zetsche said that he will still attach importance to internal combustion engines and will invest 3 billion euros in improving engine efficiency during the same period.

The background of the increased investment is Daimler's impressive sales performance. The financial report for the 2016 fiscal year (ending December 2016) released on the same day showed that sales increased by 3% year-on-year to 153.261 billion euros, a record high. The sales of passenger cars of the "Mercedes-Benz" brand are very strong.
