Honda's Japanese factory shut down for one day due to ransomware attack

According to Reuters, Honda Motor said on June 21 local time that due to the invasion of the WannaCry ransomware virus, Honda Motor's Sayama plant northwest of Tokyo had stopped production for one day on June 19 local time.

The Sayama plant reportedly produces models including Accord, Odyssey and Step Wagon, with a daily output of around 1,000 vehicles.

A Honda spokesperson said that on June 19, Honda discovered that the ransomware had affected Japan, North America, Europe, China and other regions. In mid-May, when the ransomware caused chaos in factories, hospitals and stores around the world, Honda had taken corresponding protection measures for its systems. The spokesperson said that Honda's other factories were not affected by the virus, and Sayama had resumed normal production on June 20.

Since May, the WannaCry ransomware has invaded 200,000 computers in more than 150 countries. Although the spread has slowed down, a new version of the virus is likely to strike again.

In fact, Honda is not the first car company to be hacked. Last month, Renault and Nissan were also attacked by ransomware, causing Renault-Nissan Alliance factories in Japan, the United Kingdom, France, Romania and India to temporarily stop production.
