Volkswagen and Mobileye team up to implement autonomous driving and will launch driverless taxi service next year

On October 30, foreign media reported that Volkswagen and Mobileye announced a joint launch of a driverless taxi service called New Mobility in Israel. This is not a test project, it will be officially operated next year.

Intel's Mobileye will provide Volkswagen with Level 4 autonomous driving hardware and software. In this cooperation, Volkswagen is responsible for providing pure electric vehicles. Moreover, Volkswagen is the first public customer of Mobileye's technology. At present, the two parties have not disclosed which Volkswagen electric vehicle will be used in the new service.

Mobileye's autonomous driving suite will cover autonomous driving solutions including hardware, driving strategies, safety software and map data.

The fleet will begin to be deployed early next year. Initially, the fleet will have dozens of vehicles. In 2022, the fleet size will expand to hundreds of vehicles.

VW is not part of an alliance between BMW, Intel, Mobileye and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles that is working on semi- and fully autonomous driving technology for production vehicles and has test cars on the road.

The cooperation between Mobileye and Volkswagen is different from the previous autonomous driving alliance. Mobileye and Volkswagen formed a joint venture, and Intel will provide the master control autonomous driving kit and assemble it on existing Volkswagen models. The alliance is a joint development of autonomous driving between different companies.

In addition to cooperating with Mobileye, Volkswagen also cooperates with Apple and Aurora.

Apple has equipped Volkswagen T6 commercial vehicles with Apple's self-driving kit to provide commuting services for employees in the Apple Park. Volkswagen has partnered with Aurora to build self-driving mobility services and integrate Aurora's self-driving system into Volkswagen's automotive platform.
