All-out attack is in vain: Google's performance is still supported by advertising

Even if Google is reorganized into a subsidiary of Alphabet, allowing the revenue from their other businesses to stand out more, it is difficult to conceal the huge revenue Google earns from its advertising business.

The first quarter 2018 financial report shows that of Alphabet's $31.1 billion in revenue this quarter (up 26% year-on-year), $26.6 billion came from advertising and $150 million came from other business revenue. The rest of the revenue came from hardware sales, Play Store revenue, and subscription service revenues such as YouTube Red, Google Cloud and Drive, totaling $4.3 billion.

The recent controversy over YouTube ads will alert Google to not only pay attention to the placement of ads, but also monitor their content. Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who attended the meeting as a member of Alphabet's board of directors, said at the meeting that they have been committed to ensuring that YouTube has first-class content while remaining a safe platform. He went on to say that machine learning technology has been applied to select content that violates the rules. In the last quarter alone, this machine system reported more than 6 million illegal videos, of which more than 75% were successfully detected before being viewed by users.

But when asked about the direction of YouTube's development now, Pichai mentioned that the team is very focused on securing new formats, such as mobile streaming and VR. They are also looking for profit models that allow platform creators to place ads other than subscriptions, such as merchandise sales and ticket sales. Sponsorship, which is already in beta, will also be tried to expand to YouTube TV and music. Pichai finally thanked Google employees who have been through a difficult few weeks together because of the tragedy that just happened on YouTube, especially the affected families. Starting this quarter, Google's hardware sales figures include Nest. Pichai said that they sold more Nest products in 2017 than the total of the past two years, but further detailed figures were not released. Google's other parts of the business also continue to do well, including Cloud and G Suite services. In addition to their latest release of automated home technology, they have obtained a contract described by Pichai as "larger and more strategic cooperation." Finally, Pichai provided the progress of the Subscribe With Google plan they launched last month, saying that since its launch, more than 300 news media have been interested in joining the service.
