BYD Han's sales in July 2021 reached 8,522 units, a year-on-year increase of 607%, maintaining a steady growth trend. From its launch in July 2020 to the end of July 2021, BYD Han's cumulative sales in its first year on the market have exceeded 100,000 units, reaching 101,309 units, ranking No. 1 in the Chinese brand mid-to-high-end new energy vehicle market and No. 1 in the Chinese brand mid-to-large sedan market.

As one of the core components of Han EV, what technical advantages does the blade battery have in terms of charging?

High charging peak power does not mean fast charging speed

When charging an electric car, we often pay attention to the charging power of the vehicle, because the charging power directly determines the charging efficiency, but the charging power here is not the maximum charging power, but the average charging power, so as to reflect the actual charging efficiency.

At present, many supercharging technologies claim that the charging power can reach 250kW or even higher. However, in actual use, it is found that, firstly, it is necessary to rely on a dedicated super charging pile to achieve supercharging. It is difficult to reach the peak output power of the charging pile with other charging piles, and the charging power is greatly reduced; secondly, even with a super charging pile, the peak power is only reached for a few minutes, and then the power will drop very quickly, and the actual charging speed is not ideal.

BYD Han EV equipped with blade batteries can achieve fast charging as long as the charging pile supports it. The charging power will remain relatively stable, and at the same time, it can basically reach the maximum output power of the charging pile. The high-power charging time can basically charge to 90% of the power. Why is the ternary lithium battery, which is thought to charge quickly, not as good as the blade battery in actual charging?

Formulate scientific charging strategies based on the development experience of power batteries

According to the power calculation formula P=UI, at the same power, the higher the charging voltage, the smaller the corresponding charging current. Under Joule's law Q=I2Rt, high current charging will inevitably generate a lot of heat, and the charging loss will also increase. The larger the current charging, the greater the damage to the battery. In addition, the ternary material itself is not resistant to high temperature, so high power charging requires solving the heat dissipation problem, otherwise thermal runaway is likely to occur.

As a power battery of the lithium iron phosphate system, BYD's blade battery has a high temperature resistance of 500°C, which is much better than the 200°C of ternary materials. At the same time, BYD has always adopted a high-voltage charging solution to reduce heat generation and loss, improve charging efficiency, and protect the battery. Under BYD's advanced battery thermal management system, the blade battery can maintain high-power charging for a long time, ultimately achieving a maximum range of 135km after charging for 10 minutes for the Han EV.

The blade battery has a long blade-like appearance, and the battery pack adopts a non-modular design. The batteries directly form the battery pack, so that they can be evenly arranged in the battery pack, and the battery heat dissipation is from the liquid-cooled U-tube to the liquid-cooled panel, which is more uniform and effective. Its heat dissipation area is larger than that of traditional batteries, reducing heat accumulation. For the battery thermal management system, the temperature of the battery cells inside the battery pack is more consistent, and the thermal management system has a higher heat exchange capacity, which can always keep the battery cells in the optimal operating temperature range. Therefore, it is ensured that during the long-term high-power charging process of the blade battery, the heat generated by the battery can be released in time to avoid the impact of excessive battery temperature on battery safety performance and service life.
