Daimler CEO Ola Källenius: Semiconductor shortages will continue until next year, but domestic sales are expected to rise

Since mid-August, a large-scale epidemic has occurred in Malaysia, the world's largest automotive chip production base, which has made the already tight chip supply situation even worse. On September 6, Daimler CEO Ola Källenius said that although the chip shortage is expected to ease in the fourth quarter of this year, the structural demand shortage will continue until 2022.

According to statistics from foreign agencies, as of August 9 this year, the global chip shortage has led to a reduction in automobile production of 5.85 million vehicles, and the annual production reduction is expected to reach 7 million vehicles.

Domestic auto brands have also been affected by the chip shortage. NIO delivered 5,880 vehicles in August, and the epidemic affected their production capacity by about 2,000 to 3,000 vehicles. A sales manager at GAC Trumpchi 4S store also said that the entire industry is now short of chips, and it will take at least one and a half months to pick up a new car order.

Chen Shihua, deputy secretary-general of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, said that the domestic automobile production reduction caused by the chip shortage in August is expected to reach 500,000 to 700,000 vehicles, and sales in the third and fourth quarters are likely to show negative year-on-year growth. However, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers previously predicted that the total domestic automobile sales in 2021 will reach 27 million vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 6.7%.

CITIC Securities' auto analysts also expect that the auto industry will Production Scheduling It will return to a relatively ideal level and car sales will gradually improve.

Xin Guobin, vice minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, recently said that in order to solve the shortage of automotive chips, we should make up for the shortcomings of the industry, improve the level of the entire industrial chain, and implement chain strengthening and chain supplementation actions. At the same time, we should accelerate the research and development and industrialization of automotive chips and operating systems, guide enterprises to optimize the layout of the supply chain, and improve the stability, security and competitiveness of the industrial chain.
