Little-known Lamborghini history records From the lowest Lamborghini to the world's first super SUV

[Sant'Agata Bolognese, September 7, 2021] Throughout its history, Automobili Lamborghini has set numerous records and pioneering achievements that have made it a benchmark for excellence and innovation in the automotive industry. Here are five little-known facts:

1. Marzal: The car with the largest glass surface area - 4.5 square meters

Designed by Marcello Gandini of Carrozzeria Bertone, the Lamborghini Marzal is a four-seater luxury touring car that has become a global benchmark for style and design. The interior, which is entirely made of silver leather and has a hexagonal pattern, is one of the characteristics that makes the Marzal's design unique. The central theme of the overall design is reflected in as many details as possible and perfectly echoes the shape of the dashboard, rear window and console. The most prominent feature of the Marzal is the large glass that extends from the gull-wing doors to the roof, with an area of 4.5 square meters.

This feature also makes the Marzal the fully functional show car with the largest glass area in history.

2. Miura: Designed by the youngest team in Lamborghini's history, with an average age of only 29

Since the beginning of his business, Mr. Ferruccio Lamborghini hoped to provide broad development space for outstanding and talented young people, and the Miura project is the best example.

In order to cope with the competition at the time and to get the company off the ground, Ferruccio Lamborghini worked with the youngest outstanding professionals selected from universities and the automotive industry. In 1966, the youngest design team in Lamborghini's history created the Miura, an extraordinary car that eventually became a legend. In this team with an average age of only 29 years old, designer Marcello Gandini and test driver Bob Wallace were both 28 years old, chief engineer Gian Paolo Dallara and assistant engineer Paolo Stanzani were both 30 years old.

These young people later became outstanding figures in their respective professional fields in the automotive industry, which clearly confirms Mr. Ferruccio Lamborghini's foresight in selecting and appointing the right people to the right positions.

3. Miura: The lowest production road car ever – 105.5cm

In the 1960s, low-slung bodies and streamlined aerodynamics were considered by designers to be the most important aspects when developing sports cars.

At just 105.5 centimeters tall, the Lamborghini Miura was the lowest-height production car ever, a record that is part of Lamborghini’s DNA and a design feature that remains an integral part of Lamborghini’s exterior design today.

4. Lamborghini LM002: The first super SUV in history

The project was originally intended to create a high-performance military off-road vehicle. At the 1986 Brussels Motor Show, the project was unveiled as a planned production model named LM002.

As a product completely different from other models on the market at that time, the LM002 has a cutting-edge design and excellent performance comparable to Lamborghini super sports cars. The LM002 has excellent off-road capabilities and a strong and powerful line design. Its engine displacement is 5,167cc and it can output up to 450 horsepower at 6,800 rpm. A total of 300 Lamborghini LM002s were produced between 1986 and 1992.

The LM002, with its aluminum and fiberglass body and all-wheel drive, two-speed transfer case and locking center differential, could climb grades of 120 percent, making it the first Super SUV in history. This achievement is now replicated in the Lamborghini Urus, the direct successor to the LM002 and the world's first mass-produced Super SUV.

5. Countach: The first car with scissor doors

The vertically opening doors of Lamborghini, also known as "scissor doors", are the most iconic feature of Lamborghini's V12 super sports car family. The Countach model launched in 1971, designed by Mr. Marcello Gandini, was the first series-produced car to adopt vertically opening doors. Today, scissor doors are still one of the distinctive features of Lamborghini's most powerful models.

This design is not only for aesthetic considerations, but also for the practicality of the upward-opening door. The upward-opening door allows the driver to lean out of the cockpit to better observe the area behind the car when reversing, solving the problem of obstructed vision at the rear of the vehicle and also solving the problem of being unable to open the long door after parking in a small space.

From the Countach's successor model Diablo, to the Murciélago, Reventón, Veneno, Centenario, and then to the Aventador series, the vertical door opening method has become an indispensable and important feature of the Lamborghini 12-cylinder product family.
