According to foreign media reports, scientists at Stanford University in California have invented a new circuit board that can help people understand the true power of their own brains. This neural grid is modeled after the human brain and can simulate one million nerve cells and billions of synapses, far exceeding other brain-mimicking devices. Stanford researchers are currently working on the BRAIN project to develop new tools to measure brain activity. The neural grid is the size of an iPad and has 16 specially made "neural core" chips that are more efficient than ordinary computers and 9,000 times faster. "From a pure energy perspective, the brain is very difficult to match," said Kwabena Boahen, an associate professor of bioengineering at Stanford University. But Boahen and his fellow bioengineers hope that this project can pave the way for advances in robotics and computers and find new ways to understand how the brain works. Currently, only individuals who understand the human brain can program the neural grid, but Boahen plans to create a "neural compiler" that will enable scientists without knowledge of neurobiology to use the device. Researchers at Stanford University are also now working together to develop a prosthetic limb controlled by a chip similar to the neural mesh, which decodes brain signals directly into movement. Boahen said that the neural mesh is the most cost-effective tool developed so far, but each loop circuit still costs about $400, and researchers are now looking for ways to reduce costs. In any case, research on simulating the human brain still has a long way to go. Boahen said: "The human brain has 80,000 times the number of neurons as the neural mesh, but consumes only three times the energy. Achieving this level of energy efficiency is the ultimate challenge."
